finally it is that time

Finally it is that time, the time where WE (pachia and i) ARE SENIORS. Well Pachia is not officially a senior until Tuesday when she starts school. I've already had my first week of school over. Can you believe it? I've had my LAST first day of school already. It is still kind of scary to think of---my last year of high school, no way. The only bad thing is that I am one of the "oldest" in the school. And I don't know like 80% of the schools because they are full of underclassmen. I knew a lot of upperclassmen, even when I was a freshman but now I am an upperclassmen and my underclassmen friends are very few. Well maybe I will make more later when club activities start and I am in quite a few clubs (and officier for every one of them). I am looking forward to making new friends and getting to know my senior classmates who I have not met already.

On Friday, our first senior event was the SENIOR SUNRISE. We had to get to the stadium at 6am. I got there at like...6:20. So the sun was already up but it was still fun to hang out. We just mostly ate pancakes, took lots of pictures and just messed around until school started at 7:45. It was still great hang out time tho.

Do you like our senior shirts?
I think they are okay.

I am looking forward to the events to come, the friends to come, the ups and downs of the year to come. Bring it on I SAY!

goals for senior year.
  1. don't lose sight of your dreams
  2. dont lose sight of your goals
  3. procastination, once again, is BADDD
  4. dont avoid applications and hard work because you are scared of the future
  5. stay focused
  6. keep grades up
  7. dont stress yourself out (or you will have an ulcer)
  8. dont get depressed at all
  9. have fun, and lots of iiiiittttt
  10. dont let anything or anyone stop you from having a kickass year.
  11. go to a jonas brothers concert

So I am freaking addicted to this song. (EDIT: ADDED NUMBER 11)

He's Likes Them Young ...

So John McCain has made his choice for his running mate. Congratulations to Peggy Hill ...
Photobucket

Oh wait .. that’s not right. Congrats to Alaska governor Sarah Palin...
Photobucket

My favorite part of her speech was not how McCain had to read her “accomplishments” and even her freaking name of a note card because he didn’t know who she was. Nope. My favorite part was how, while Sarah was speaking, McCain kept playing with his wedding ring while checking her out ...
Photobucket

He looks like he’s ready to slip off his wedding wring and turn to one of his servants and say “Have this one bathed and brought to my quarters along with a tray of your finest meats and cheeses and a bottle of wine.”

And I didn’t find this hilarious at all....
Photobucket

(Okay, maybe I did a little.)

In other news do any of you watch “Million Dollar Listing” on Bravo? I have to admit that I do watch it. Not so much because it’s such an awesome show, but because of this dude ...

I’m hoping that at some point Chad Rogers will tell everyone which Tupperware bowl he has his stylist use when he gets his hair done. You know I'm always on the look out for a new look. I wonder if my barber, who only charges $7 for a haircut, could do this?

Originally I was going to do the drawing for "The Fourth Turning" today, but that has be rescheduled for later this week. I think I need a new chord for my camera. Or maybe it's the computer. I'm not sure. Anyway, I'll figure it out and do the video of the drawing and post it on Friday.

Aaaaaaaaaaaand I’ve got family in town this week. So, I might not be around all that much. I know I’ve been a bit lax in commenting some already the last week, but I promise after this week I will get back to normal. Well as “normal” as I get.

Say Hello to My Little Wordzzle....

Photobucket

Once again it’s Wordzzle time kids. And as usual Raven is our gracious and creative host. If you would like to play along, just go on by her place and say hello. Everyone is welcome.

The words for the ten word challenge are: pogo stick, ant farm, psychic, tin box, wall safe, Waterloo, surge protector, pneumonia, ravages of time, turtle

And for the Mini Challenge: Swollen ankles, opera singer, toothy grin, oil paints, potter’s wheel

As usual I’m doing the Mega Wordzzle with all 15 words in my Vader series, which I need to be wrapping up pretty soon.

Down and Out in Vegas: Part A Lot.

Vader left Pandora and Tiffany to their fun in the room and decided instead of going to sleep he would go for a bit of a walk. The hotel was in one of the more colorful areas of town, so he figured he would find some entertainment. But first he was hungry, so finding some food took priority. He couldn’t do too much because he left is ID and credit cards back in the wall safe in the room.

About two blocks down the road Vader came across The Potter’s Wheel and decided a nice bowl of turtle soup was just what he needed to lift his spirits. So he went inside and sat down and ordered a large bowl. He was a bit amused to see that San Francisco is such a tech-loving town that each table had a surge protector on it so people could plug in their laptops. He was wishing he had his after seeing that.

After taking his time to enjoy his comfort food Vader was feeling better about things and was ready to head on out and see what else he could find. As soon as he walked outside he realized that it was considerably cooler than it had been and it was beginning to mist a bit. “I’ll probably catch pneumonia out here, but what the hell,” he said as he turned down towards an area that looked to be having some sort of festival.

The first place he came upon was a psychic who was sitting in what looked like a tin box. She motioned for him to come in and told him she could do a reading for him for only $5. Vader was feeling adventurous so he agreed.

The crazy looking old lady then held Vader’s hands and closed her eyes and began to chant a bit. Then she got quiet. She was breathing deeply when she suddenly spoke.

“You were once a very powerful man. Many people feared you. But, the ravages of time have taken their toll on you. Now people think nothing of insulting you or dismissing you as a pathetic old man.”

Vader wasn’t exactly pleased with what he was hearing, but he didn’t stop her.

“What little power you have left will have to be used wisely. If you try for something too big, it will backfire on you. You must be careful.”

“Well that was a freaking waste,” thought Vader as he walked away and headed towards the Waterloo district. When he got there he couldn’t believe his eyes.

The first person he came across was an opera singer performing for a small crowd. Next was a man who was also singing, but doing so while bouncing along on a pogo stick. Vader laughed when thought about that guy suffering with swollen ankles every night.

Next up was an ant farm. There was a very odd fellow there offering to explain what all the ants were doing, but Vader passed. Next to him was a man working with some oil paints creating masterpieces in between tokes on a joint.

Then Vader heard someone say “Hello there sir” behind him. He turned around was astonished at what he saw. There was a man smiling at him with a toothy grin wearing assless chaps, a black leather vest and a Lone Ranger mask. Vader was speechless and the man just shrugged his shoulders and moved on.

“What a bunch of freaks,” Vader said as he surveyed the scene in front of him. “I love it here.”

we can make change happen.

I am a little late (day after) to talk about Obama's speech but I DO NOT believe a speech like his last night can be OVERSHADOWED by Mccain's VP pick, even though it has been. But last night's speech left me an impression that like my AP Government said, "his speech is a speech you will remember for the rest of your life". I do not know if everyone felt that way (probably not), but a connection was made for me when I heard his speech last night.

Well I have been of course watching majority of the Democratic National Convention so of course the previous speakers (Hilary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Joe Biden, Michelle Obama, etc) had set a very high bar for Barack Obama. Finally, it was his turn to convince the people that he is the right person. There is only so much others can say to endorse him but it is up to him to impress and swing the voters in his favor. And I believe he did his job. Hilary Clinton was able to tell her former supporters that they should not swing Republican. Biden assured us that Obama is a good man and Biden did swing many more voters in Obama's favor. I didn't really want to talk about Biden's speech but I DID LIKE IT! I don't know but I just like Biden by looking at him. And he had a great personal story. He made me love him after his speech.

However, in the beginning of Obama's speech, I was kind of bored. He seemed to have a VERY SLOW start and said a lot of cliches and kind of summed up what everyone said in the last couple days. But somewhere, I don't know where but it just PICKED UP and just started getting better, and better and I was on the edge of my seat. AT ONE POINT, I stood up because I was overwhelmed and amazed by his words. Of course I teared up at several points in his speech but I think I teared up in every speech (except Bill Clinton's). The things that struck to me the most was when he had one point where he talked about his family. He said
Because in the faces of those young veterans who come back from Iraq and Afghanistan, I see my grandfather, who signed up after Pearl Harbor, marched in Patton's Army, and was rewarded by a grateful nation with the chance to go to college on the GI Bill.

In the face of that young student who sleeps just three hours before working the night shift, I think about my mom, who raised my sister and me on her own while she worked and earned her degree; who once turned to food stamps but was still able to send us to the best schools in the country with the help of student loans and scholarships.
What struck me about that quote was he was implying that back then, his family struggled but America helped them out, but why can America no longer help us now? He reminded me that
Ours is a promise that says government cannot solve all our problems, but what it should do is that which we cannot do for ourselves - protect us from harm and provide every child a decent education; keep our water clean and our toys safe; invest in new schools and new roads and new science and technology.
I know that being an American, we don't always expect the government to be there. We like to keep a distance from our government but at this time, this period, we need our government desperately. I see the economy, homes, families, and people crumbling before me. I know of the problems that exist in this country and Obama does too and he has pinpointed and addressed every one of them.

And the thing that Obama definetly did what he needed to do was ATTACK McCain ("If John McCain wants to have a debate about who has the temperament, and judgment, to serve as the next Commander-in-Chief, that's a debate I'm ready to have.") and give us SUBSTANCE. And he brought that last night. He showed us that he is ready for the fight, he is ready for those debates with Mccain. And last night, he finally told us what he wanted to do. Although he may have been too specific because of course I questioned where is he going to get the money when we are in a trillion dollar deficit but of course, Mccain is going to have the same problem also. But Obama did a good job of attack Mccain in the right points. It is because of his status quo and that he "doesnt understand" is why he cannot be the right person for the job.

And what I loved most was he brought up this is more about partisan politics (democrats vs. republicans), this is more about abortion (pro-life vs. pro-choice), it is about the common ground, is about the common American goals in life and we need to get back to it. We need to get back to the original ideals of democracy.

We may not agree on abortion, but surely we can agree on reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies in this country. The reality of gun ownership may be different for hunters in rural Ohio than for those plagued by gang-violence in Cleveland, but don't tell me we can't uphold the Second Amendment while keeping AK-47s out of the hands of criminals. I know there are differences on same-sex marriage, but surely we can agree that our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters deserve to visit the person they love in the hospital and to live lives free of discrimination. Passions fly on immigration, but I don't know anyone who benefits when a mother is separated from her infant child or an employer undercuts American wages by hiring illegal workers. This too is part of America's promise - the promise of a democracy where we can find the strength and grace to bridge divides and unite in common effort.
He addressed every issue that we talk about amongst ourselves. Every time he hit an issue that I have discussed with a friend or a family member or a stranger, I though wow he really does know. Once he started talking about the common effort, he just soared from there. And when he talked about all these things and when he said
The times are too serious, the stakes are too high for this same partisan playbook. So let us agree that patriotism has no party. I love this country, and so do you, and so does John McCain. The men and women who serve in our battlefields may be Democrats and Republicans and Independents, but they have fought together and bled together and some died together under the same proud flag. They have not served a Red America or a Blue America - they have served the United States of America.
I felt proud to be an American. And I think during these times when America has such a bad reputation, when everyone has been making fun our own president, when our own citizens cannot even take pride in our president, and when our own soldiers are fighting a hated war, American patriotism has been waning since the great masses of it during Sept. 11th but Obama brought it back to me. I seriously am proud to be an American because through the American dream and the freedoms in this country that someone like Barack Obama can be president and I will be even prouder when he is President. He is reminded me this country is made of individuals united in one effort for our American democracy and ideals. And he has reminded the voters that they all count and the government is there for them. He tied everything that from change, to the American dream, and the promise of America all into his speech and he did it well.

I have greater hope for this country after his speech. And if Obama does not get elected, I will be truely sad for the future of this country.

Oh and I am not going to post the video because it is like 40 minutes long so you can see it on the democratic national convention website or ny times.

Oh and thoughts on the Republicans. I think Mccain would have a better chance with Rominey (though he couldnt because he was too rich) but who the heck is this random woman? Like they said on CNN or whatever (my mom told me this quote), you cant just put a skirt on someone and expect her to be Hilary Clinton. She barely has experience and honestly, if Mccain dies, would you want her to be president? This is a very bad choice for Mccain. I think his VP choice is going to PULL votes away from him. It is already evident that some Republicans are going to vote for Obama because either they liked Obama's speech or because they like Biden. At least if Obama was to get "assassinated" (knock on wood), Biden would be a great president. I am excited for the Republican National Convention! I want to hear this obsure Alaskan governor speak!!!! And Mccain. I actually liked Mccain back in the primaries so lets see if I still like him.

And why am I so interested in the democratic national convention? Because in AP government we have had like at least 30 minute discussions in class about them and they have been EXCITING and i love hear other people's opinions so of course all I have said in this blog, I talked about in class and a lot of people felt similar to me.

I glad I have watched the Democratic National Convention because I feel like this is a moment in history. Watching Obama made me want to cry because I thought of him being president and that is just so historic that I could not even imagine it. It is truely amazing what a revolution this election year is. And I am SAD I CANNOT VOTE AND BE APART OF IT. But I am so glad I witnessed his speech last night because I WILL not forget what he said and I cannot believe for those who did not watch it that they missed such a great opportunity to be truely enlightened.

AND IF ANYONE DISAGREES WITH ME GO AHEAD, I want to hear your response and thoughts. :) I am a friendly debater.

disappointment, disappointment.

"When I heard they were turning the Korean romantic comedy My Sassy Girl into an American movie, I had mixed feelings. First, I was excited because I highly enjoyed the Korean original. But I was also skeptical because it seems many Asian movies translated into an American version simply aren’t as good. Either way, I knew just had to see My Sassy Girl." - Cara de Pescado

uh, same here cara. and ever since summer of 08 has started, i had been wondering a lot about when i was going to start seeing that movie trailer on tv! well, sad to say i went to hollywood videos the other day with the TP gang, and there it was! sitting on the shelf, stiff and new, never been watched. each and every single one of them. it was too disappointing to see them like that. i mean i knew i was going to be disappointed, but it was so bad that it didn't even get featured on tv? yikes, that must've been really bad. i didn't want to watch it, but tommy loved the original so much that he just had to see it (even though he saw the horrendous trailer), so we rented it and watched about 1/4 of it then just stopped altogether, because it was so bad not even marissa or tyler could stand it (and they havent even seen the original!). ahhhh... its good we stopped because the american version would've ruined the orignal version for them, which we're planning to watch the next time we have a TP movie night again.

really though, the movie was just bad. i mean i love jesse bradford and elisha cuthbert, they're great actors, its just that the movie didn't come out right. the humor wasn't there, the characters weren't right. cuthbert's character seemed more like a cracked out crazy lady than the sassy girl she was supposed to be. and although i really loved the movie's appeal with all the bright designs they added on, i just dont think it worked out right. as quoted by tommy, "she was better as a porno star." i guess we should've watched it to the end, but nothing was coming out right, and it just seemed like an odd rushed love story, that didn't really make sense. it just didn't translate right. it felt like you were reading a bad fanfic, those that dont make sense and have no development to it at all. blagh :( its gotta be a big zero for me. but then again you must consider that MY SASSY GIRL is the movie that changed my whole entire life, introduced me to this crazy new world of asian entertainment, that has basically shaped me into the person i am today! and if it wasnt for that movie, ck and i might've never even became friends. yuup, it was that freaking good of a movie. you need to watch it if you haven't yet :)

aside from that, good news you guys. yaaaaaayyyyyyy, i bought my camera today! OH MY GOODNESS. i'm so excited. im going to be posting pictures of evvvvverryyythinggggg.

and i can't believe mccain's vp choice is sarah palin. ahhhhhh! not that i don't like her its just ahhhhhhhh, frustrating. that means he's going to steal votes from obama just because he has a woman on his side!! i was pretty upset about it earlier this morning when i found out, but i guess the steam has cooled off. geeeez. i guess it's because i feel like obama is the only hope for america. we need a little change, don't you think? i dont want mccain to win! of course, yadadaa, we've all heard it, but it's true, it's just going to be bush all over again. why can't they lower the voting age? i guess i'm just going to have to wait another 4 years to vote.

♥PACHIA LUCY BANG!

McCain Picks Palin As Running Mate

So I'm watching the Democrat's news station, CNN, and they are attacking McCain and Palin. This one douche bag just asked, "How can someone with only 2 years of experience as Governor of Alaska be qualified to be Vice President?" Let's see - probably the same way that some guy with only 2 years experience as an Illinois Senator could be qualified to be President, maybe???

Funny how the liberal media thinks Joe Biden, who's guilty of plagiarism, said he would vote for McCain before he ever voted for Obama, and said that Obama was articulate and clean (usually considered racially insensitive statements), could be praised as a VP candidate, yet Palin is attacked. They are asking how she can be VP with 5 kids, one of which has Down's Syndrome. Is the liberal media suggesting that a mother of children should stay home and raise her babies? Are the feminists going nuts right now or are they severely confused?

Obama or Ravens?

Yesterday afternoon I was given the option of going to soccer practice, attending a soccer coach's meeting (which I honestly forgot about) and watching Obama bin Biden or going to the Ravens' game. After half a second of careful consideration, I decided to wait until the soccer practice was canceled, which it was.

And I wasn't really interested in Obama. More of the same - we need unspecified change and this is a momentous moment. Tom Brokow and Brian Williams were just as giddy with excitement in anticipation of Obama's upcoming speach. The were bursting at the seems. Want to bet that they lethargic and highly critical of McCain?

Anyway, we (my friend Dave, his daughter and my daughter) left for the game at 4:30 and go to the parking lot about 5:15. This was after passing a sign stating that there was a 4 hour back-up leading up to the Bay Bridge. Think we need another bridge? I'd say so. It's only another billion dollars. Just end the Iraq War a day early and there's your money.

After tailgating for a while, the 4 of us head into the stadium. There's not many people in attendance today. Perhaps they're all home watching the guy with 2 years of national political experience accept the Democrats' bid for the presidency.

Highlights of the night include a bunch of people arriving mid-2nd quarter to jibes of, "The game started at 7 o'clock!!!" And some drunk-ass guy walked into my aisle, stood in front of me and said in a jerk-head way, "Get up, pal. You're in my seat!!!" I stood up to his face and said, "let's see." I pulled out my ticket. Section 503, Row 15? "No, I'm in row 16." "Well, I guess you're sitting behind me now, aren't you???" ('huckfead' under my breath) After that he was as nice as could be. He must have apologized 4 times. Whatever. Good rule of thumb - don't act like a F'in Jackass until you know that you're right.

For Mort - sorry it's blurry. Not quite the same as an Orioles game on a hot July night. It was about 65 degrees and raining. Boooo!

We left at halftime, because the kids had school the next day. The game was melodramatic. A couple of decent passes, but nothing spectacular. Though it looks like yet another season of a dismal Ravens' offense.

Memories

I found a bunch of my saved letters and stuff at my parentals house so I took the boxes back with me to the house. I just went to clean out the boxes and see what exactly was in it. Lo and behold, there's all the emails and letters and notes that Ira had written me. Man were those emails long! Right now, he's at Willy's house playing poker with the boys. So I laid here, skimming through the emails and letters. I can't help but smile. He's so cute. His emails still make me smile and giggle and makes my heart palpitate. Hahaha.

I love him, and I can't wait to see what God has planned for the rest of our lives together. I really really love him.

How 'Bout a College Story ...

The first weekend of my sophomore year I somehow acquired (stole or it was stolen for me) a bottle of Seagram’s Seven and decided to take it over to a friend’s dorm room and share. I’m nice and thoughtful like that.

So, I put the bottle in my backpack and headed over to the other dorm. As I walked into the building there was a DPS officer standing there. WTF? Anyway, he was waiting on the elevator so I there I was, 18 years old and a bottle of liquor in my backpack chatting with a freaking cop. He’s all like “A little Sunday night study session the first week?” And I was like “Oh yeah, I can’t afford to get behind.” while, sounding like Opie Taylor.

Anyway we didn’t waste much time getting busy drinking the 7&7 and watching a couple of movies (porn). Okay, I’m kidding about the porn. I’m pretty sure we were watching “The Lost Boys”. I don’t know why I remember that, but I do.

One of things I found out that night was that hard liquor has a much different affect on me than beer. We all learn this lesson at some point in our lives and I learned it that night. It turned out that my friend had his own bottle of Black Jack, so I only had to share a little bit of my 7&7 with a couple of people.

Long about 2 am I announced that I need to get home because I had an Emerging Nations political science class at SEVEN THIRTY IN THE MORNING! And everybody laughed. I was like “What? I’ll be there.” Again everyone laughed. So I announced that I if I wasn’t in my class at 7:30 am, I would buy (or otherwise acquire) a bottle of Seagram’s or Black Jack for each person in the room. I think there were seven of us in the room at the time.

Now I’m pretty sure that according the law degree that I don’t have, agreements entered into while one or both parties are slobbering drunk aren’t valid. Besides, it was unlikely that more than one or two people would remember that promise anyway. But, being the honorable guy that I am I decided I would go anyway.

I chose to have only some toast and orange juice for breakfast and headed down the hill to Carnall Hall for my class. Carnall is now a hotel, but at the time was a pretty run down building on the edge of the campus that held about a dozen classrooms.

It didn’t seem too warm while walking down there, but after I got into the room and took my seat, which was right next to the back door I realized that it was quite warm in there. I looked around and all the windows were closed. I told myself that it would fine, and to just relax.

So then our professor came in. I can’t remember this guy’s name, but he always made quite an entrance. Folks, no offense meant, but this guy was FAY-MING! He was hilarious though and was pretty fun to watch flitter around the room and lecture. I never knew whether he was going to actually lecture or break out into show tunes. And before you laugh too hard, I should say that I would probably recognize any show tune he sang.

About 15 minutes into class I was really starting to struggle. I started telling myself things like “Hey, I just promised to be here on time, I didn’t promise to stay.” Then I suddenly realized that I was sweating so much that my shirt was getting wet.

Then it happened.

As carefully and quietly, yet as quickly as I could I got up and made a dash for the bathroom. Let’s just say that the orange juice was a bad idea. Luckily though I made it to the restroom in time and didn’t puke in the hall or anything like that.

I stayed in there for several minutes to make sure I wasn’t going to puke again and then washed my face and got a drink of water. Then I gave myself yet another couple of minutes and went back to class and tried to sneak back to my seat.

Just after I sat down the professor kind of smiled and said “Water. Drinking lots of water is the key to recovery.”

I didn’t want to look at anyone else in the class at all. But, I stayed for the rest of the class and when it was over, as I was leaving the room some girl gave me a pat on the butt and said “way to hang in there dude.”

And, another guy, who I kind of knew came up to me and said “I’ll give you a ride back to your dorm if you want. I don’t think you’ll make it up the hill.”

Then ... when we got into his car he turned to me and said “How much was the bet?”

That’s when I realized that there was no reason to be embarrassed at all. Everyone in that classroom had either been there, or knew that at some point they would have the same experience.

The way I looked at was that this is pretty much what college exists for. To prepare us for these types of situations that we might find ourselves in at some point in the future. And to remember that we should confine the hard liquor to Friday and Saturday nights.

A good lesson learned.

No More Pickles and Chocolate Ice Cream

I had the weirdest dreams last night. And the crazy part is that I vividly remember them. First, I was a hostage in Afghanistan. Not funny at all. My captors kept making me do weird stuff, but never demanding anything from me.

Afterwards, while living in my grandmother's house in Newark, Delaware, I was pregnant. I could feel the baby moving. Ladies - that's just weird. I'm sure it was just all of the food moving around in my belly, but ugh.

So, the lesson learned here - no more fried pickles, salsa, beer and brownies before bed.

Natalie Martinez

Natalie Martinez (born July 12, 1984 in Miami, Florida) is a Cuban-American actress and model. She is best known for her role as Michelle Miller on MyNetworkTV telenovela, Fashion House. She is also the spokesmodel for JLO by Jennifer Lopez.

Ghettoness

Man...I have so much to catch up on. I think I'm going to start making it a nightly routine to type up a blog and get everything out of my head.

On the way home today, there was this ghetto guy that was behind me doing something I thought was really random. He had his sweater sleeve shoved in his mouth, and he was just sucking on it. It was the weirdest thing. I still can't figure out why. Jel thinks maybe he spilled something on it. Haha.

Updates:
  • Got our couch and dining set yesterday. Mom came with us and bought her sofas at the same time. She did what she always does, haggles the salesman until she gets the price she wants. =) Not our problem. We're not on the receiving end of her haggling. hehe.
  • I found my wedding dress. I'm so happy with it. I can't stop staring at the pictures of it. I actually found it at David's Bridal. I'm glad too, because the one I really want is too expensive. I'd rather spend that money on something else. I'm very very happy with my pick. How exciting.
  • Arlyn came to visit me on my birthday. We had a small bbq, and Jen came over with her in tow. She made me cry! I love her so much. We spent the weekend together.

Ok. Time for bed. More later. I'm sleepy.

Another critic bites the dust

Hooray free time!

Really, though, what else is there to say? I've been canned. At least from movie reviews. In this crap market, in this shit newspaper era, in this colon-reaming bout of dysentery we call an economy, what room do newspapers have for movie critics? The answer: none. And that's why critics across the country are getting pink slips, buyouts or, like me, restructured beat lists. Even Roger Ebert's long-running show was given the boot for something a third as intelligent, thus five times more sellable to a TV-watching America. If Ebert's not safe, and big-name critics at big-name papers in big-name cities aren't safe, then what hope does little Michael Clawson of the community weekly the West Valley View have? Apparently some, although that's now fading … for now. Frankly, I'm surprised I was allowed to write movie reviews through the summer.

So here's the skinny: I was told that my movie reviews would no longer be needed until ad revenue increases and page counts go up. It sucks, but I'm just grateful I still have a job (I'm also a photog and I write Volume). The movies aren't gone completely, though: reviews of "big movies" are allowed. The logic of that single instruction should make most movie critics chuckle. Hmmm, big movies … Transformers is a big movie, but it's also one of the most mindless movies ever created, too. And No Country For Old Men is a classic, but clearly not a big movie, even if it did win the Best Picture Oscar. But I get what the bosses are saying: review the movies that most of America is going to show up to see. Why give space to a movie that, yes, will win Academy Awards and be on year-end Top 10 lists, but won't be seen by 97 percent of the movie-going public?

I'm taking this news remarkably well: No anger. No hatred. No frustration. This time of year helps. The first review I didn't have to write was Death Race ... hallelujah! Had it been Wall•E or The Dark Knight I would have sobbed at my desk. How can I be mad, though? Yeah, it's miserable that the movie section I built up over eight years has been shelved, but if no movies is my sacrifice to my paper then so be it. I've read that when a person is submerged in freezing water their body senses the temperature change and, in a defensive move, begins shutting off circulation to expendable parts of the body. Heart rate slows, fingers and toes go numb, breathing slows, but the body is trying to right itself, or at least weather through the storm. I love movies to death, but I'm not afraid to admit that movie reviews are fingers and toes — expendable.

America has too little film analysis and genuine critique, two things I've always strived for in my writing; reviews are too often random commentary about the stars' nip-slips and what they wore on the red carpet at the premier. There will be a time when I can once again offer film analysis in the West Valley View. My days aren't over. To quote Ahhnold: "I'll be back." In the meantime, as many reviews as I can do will be posted here. And look for other features as well. I'll weather this storm and when I'm back in print I'll be better than ever.

How 'Bout "No." Does "No" Work For You?

So the other night I was just sitting around, minding my own business and preparing to watch Jeopardy, when the phone rang. For some reason, whenever the phone rings I jump a little and turn to the phone and say “What the hell do you want?” as if I’ve just been interrupted while doing something important. I don’t know why I react that way, but I do. Anyway, turns out it’s Uber-Volunteer who has called me.

Awww crap!

Now I’m not opposed to volunteering at all. In fact, I’m all for it. And, this does give me the chance to remind everyone that while we all get caught up in the Presidential election, we need to remember that there are tons of local issues that affect our daily lives in a big way. You’re local city council, school board, county commissioners and all those Yaw-Hoos matter. So, don’t get so caught up in the Presidential election that you forget to work to stop some fuckwit from getting elected to the city council or worse, the school board.

Here in my home county they are trying to get a the “Wet/Dry” issue on the ballot. And as you probably know, I support the county going “Wet.” That means we will allow liquor sales which we don’t currently do. And, I have already signed the petition. In fact, I signed it the first day it was out there.

So, you might be surprised to find out that when Uber Volunteer called me and asked me to go out and go door to door to collect signatures to put the “Wet/Dry” issue on the ballot I said “NO.”

And you know what else. I felt good about it too. And I still do.

There are a couple of reasons why I said no. The first one is that I really hate doing things like going door to door. If we just set up a table with a jug of lemonade and some cookies to hand out to passersby and then say “Oh, and would you please sign this petition also?” I would be more than willing to do that. But, going door to door during the dinner hour? Hell no.

Besides, in reality I’m wayyyyyy to shy to do things like that too.

The other reason I said “NO” was because Uber Volunteer annoys me quite often. It’s not just that she doesn’t like butter on her popcorn either, which is totally weird. I mean, that’s almost as weird as those people who don’t like beans in their chili. It’s just wrong.

No, what annoys me about Uber Volunteer is that she is one of these people who volunteers for damn near every single freaking thing. Then, she gets all pushy and bossy and wants everything done her way only. And, worse than that, she volunteers for everything and then doesn’t have time to do all of them.

So then she calls people like me up and asks us to do what she volunteered to do. And, she always needs me to do something RIGHT NOW! There’s simply no excuse for doing this all the time. If she had called and asked me to help out next week, or even a couple of days later I probably would have said yes. But, this time I decided that I had had enough and told her I couldn’t help.

Anyway, I think I might say no more often in the future when she, or anyone else, does the same thing. I hate saying no and have never been very good at it, but I just can’t let these people take advantage of me like that. To be honest with you, I’m kind of surprised that I don’t feel guilty about saying no at all, because normally I feel really guilty when I tell people no and then I get all down and shit.

But, not this time.

New Niko Bellic Artwork

Another great GTA IV fan artwork was released recently. This time it’s from a friend of Patrick Brown, whose amazing art creations we all admire so much, Bob Baxter. I’d say Bob did a very good job on his representation of Niko. The colors and shadows complement each other in every way, and a hint of humor completes this artwork perfectly. Those creative Australians just keep giving and giving. No doubt we’ll see more GTA artwork from Bob Baxter in future. Well done and hopefully we’ll see other main characters from GTA too!

hilary clinton is one strong woman.

Again, I want to discuss my thoughts and opinions about the Democratic National Convention and today I saw Hilary Clinton's speech. That was pretty much the only reason I tuned in today because I wanted to see how she would endorse Obama. Everyone knows Clinton has been a big Obama basher throughout her campaign (maybe even more than attacking Mccain?) and how could she just turn around and say "obama is soooo great, vote for him!".

Well I noticed there was a major standing ovation for her in the beginning. She couldn't even start her speech until at least five minutes passed because people would not shut up. Was it me or was Michelle Obama looked a little stiff lipped while smiling after like five minutes of people not quieting down and cheering Clinton? Well her goal was pretty much supposed to solidify the Democratic party and remind voters that they need to stick together and vote BLUE regardless if they are a hardcore Clinton fan. And there were quite a FEW hardcore Clinton fans (probably 60% women), my mom is a major Clinton fan too. Overall her speech was okay. She did not mention Obama lot and I don't think she really secured that he was the right choice. But I do like the direction she took in her speech. Instead of being cheesy and praising Obama (like the other hundred speakers...), she stated that
"I want you to ask yourselves: Were you in this campaign just for me? Or were you in it for that young Marine and others like him? Were you in it for that mom struggling with cancer while raising her kids? Were you in it for that boy and his mom surviving on the minimum wage? Were you in it for all the people in this country who feel invisible?"
Her speech's purpose was to remind the Democratic Clinton fans that they need to vote because of their beliefs, the changes they want, and not because whether or not they love the presidential candidate. So I am a cheesy person and I did like her personal touches of the couple stories she mentioned her speech like the woman who adopted two autistic children and had cancer and the marine. It is just one of those American things that I can't help falling for. And she tried to highlight that we vote for the "issues" not for the person.

I think she somewhat accomplished the goal of reminding the Clinton fans that they are there for the support of their party. But she did not give the confidence that Obama is the person who can accomplish it all. But I am okay with that because I would have felt she would be a hypocrite if she did. But I think her speech mostly spoke out to her fans. And it was more of thank you message and message to say "please don't vote for mccain or not vote at all because i am not the candidate". But honestly, Clinton was a confident speaker. I think she does have that confident, presidential swagger.

"No way. No how. No McCain."

But to talk about hardcore Clinton fans; CNN interviewed this one lady and she was a HARDCORE fan and she was tearing up talking about Clinton and that she was sad that she saw a real president up there. And she said she did not know what she will do because she was DEFINETLY not going to vote for Mccain but she was not confident in Obama's abilities and she believed in experience and he was not experienced. She said she was very undecided if she was going to vote. And interesting fact...she was African-American.

I think the youth needs to be more interested in politics so I hope I educated some interest in someone. My AP government class has just started (second day of school -___-) and he encourages a lot that we watch the news and keep up to date in politics and it has definetly boosted my interest. And plus it is sooo fun to participate in class discussion about politics. It really fires me up. But I am just a dork like that.

Vacation Part V - Walters Art Gallery

Though my wife wanted to attend, there was no reasonable way to entice my 6 year old son to visit an art museum. My daughter, however, seems to have the refined fine arts appreciation chromosome that most of my family lacks.

On Thursday, we ventured downtown to Mount Vernon, named in honor of George Washington, the beneficiary of our visit two days prior. I made a wrong turn and somehow ended up near the Lyric. It could have been worse. I could have ended up on Monument Street in East Baltimore. I finally versed course and found the museum, which lies a block from the Baltimore Basilica and the Pratt Free Library.

After parking my Honda Pilot in a secured lot away from the vandals, we make our way inside. Like the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Walters Art Gallery is free. That's FREE, like Alright Now. No money. My favorite kind of place.

Inside the museum is a piazza that Mr. Walters had built here after an Italian university. It houses statues, busts, paintings, and more. Additionally, there are exhibits on ancient Egypt, Muslim art, and religion. Each room has a guard standing by to apprehend any potential thieves. As expected, these guards boast admirable 300 pounds frames which would instantly spring into action should they awaken.

I finally saw some Bohemian woman snapping pictures, which I figured to be strictly prohibited. I felt compelled to inquire with one of the sleeping giants and was informed that it is perfectly fine to photograph anything in the museum. So let me get this straight - Martha Washington strictly prohibits me from taking pictures of her 200 year old rooms, but Mr. Walters has no problem with me taking photographs of 4,000 year old Egyptian artifacts? Where is the logic?

Our tour was brief, probably less than 2 hours. Sadly there were very few visitors to the museum. I found it interesting, though not fascinating. Perhaps I only retain half of that artistic chromosome. We left about 1pm and headed to lunch at one of those fancy schmansy restaurants, sort of a treat to my daughter and her high-dollar, yet distinguished taste buds.

Too many clowns, not enough circuses. Seriously, I have no idea where she gets it:

All in all, it was a good day, one that a father and daughter can enjoy. Definitely not a place to bring a whole family unless they are all bent on reading an admiring.

Adriana Lima, Doutzen Kroes more than beautiful

Adriana Lima (born June 12[4] 1981) is a Brazilian model known for her work with Victoria's Secret and Maybelline cosmetics. Lima was discovered at age 13, and entered and finished first in Brazil's Ford Supermodel of the World competition with 15, finishing second the following year before signing with Elite Model Management in New York City.

Early life and family

Lima is of African, Native South American and Swiss descent. [5][6][7] She was born in the northeastern coastal town of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil on June 12, 1981. Her father, from whom she was estranged for most of her life, is Nelson Torres. Her mother, Maria da Graça Lima, was a social worker who gave birth to Lima at the age of 18. Lima revealed that her father walked out on her family when she was six months old[8], but has been making recent attempts to reconcile.[8]. In late 2007, Lima revealed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame that although she is her mother's only child, she has two half brothers, aged 7 and 11, from her father's second marriage.[9] [10] Coming from a poor family, Lima's first travel was on a plane at the age of 15. She was raised mainly by her mother and grandmother.[8].

Career

Early career

Lima never thought about being a model. She had a friend at school who wanted to enter a modeling contest and didn't want to enter alone. So, consequently, Lima entered with her. Both sent in pictures, and the contest sponsor soon asked Lima to come out for the competition.[11] Soon after, at the age of 15, she entered and finished in first place in Brazil's Ford Supermodel of the World Search. She subsequently entered the 1996 Ford Supermodel of the World contest and finished in second place.[12] Three years later, Lima moved to New York City and signed with Elite Model Management. After acquiring representation, Lima's modeling portfolio began to expand by leaps and bounds, and she appeared in numerous international editions of Vogue and Marie Claire. As for fashion shows, she has walked the catwalks for big-name designers such as Vera Wang, Christian Lacroix, Emanuel Ungaro, Giorgio Armani, Fendi, Ralph Lauren and Valentino, among others. Lima then became a GUESS? girl appearing on GUESS?' Fall 2000 ad campaign. She also appeared in the book A second decade of Guess? Images.[13]

In 2001, Lima starred in BMW short film The Follow alongside actors Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen and Forest Whitaker. The film was directed by Hong Kong film director Wong Kar-Wai.[14]

Lima continued to build upon her portfolio, doing more print work for Maybelline, as well as bebe, Mossimo, Armani, Bulgari, De Beers, FCUK, Intimissimi, Keds, Swatch, Versace, and BCBG.[15] She also appeared on the covers and in the editorials of other fashion magazines such as Harper's Bazaar, ELLE, Vogue, GQ, Marie Claire, Arena, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, and many more.[16] Her April 2006 GQ cover was the highest-selling issue that magazine for the year.[17] She also appeared in the 2005 Pirelli Calendar[13] and became the face of Italy's cell phone carrier, Telecom Italia Mobile, a move that earned her the nickname, "the Catherine Zeta-Jones of Italy."[18]

Victoria's Secret

Lima is probably best known for her work with Victoria's Secret. She first worked for Victoria's Secret in 1998, befor entering the Fashion Show in 1999 and has appeared on subsequent shows ever since. Her most notable walk down the runway was in 2003, where she was the show opener. Lima was contracted to become an angel for Victoria's Secret in 2000 and has kept her spot ever since. Lima had appeared on several television ads for the brand but her most memorable one, was appearing alongside the legendary rock musician Bob Dylan in 2003 Victoria's Secret Angel in Venice commercial which received both praise and criticism.[19][20] She is currently a contract "Angel" and spokesperson for the brand. She was the sole model in Victoria's Secret's Super Bowl XLII ad.[13] It was the single most-seen ad in the game, watched by 103.7 million viewers.[21]

She has just confirmed in an interview that she'll be wearing the Fantasy Bra in this year's Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.

Endorsements

Lima is also a spokesperson for cosmetics giant Maybelline New York.[3] She is the world's fourth highest paid model as of 2007.[17][18][22][23]

Personal life

Lima is fluent in three languages: Portuguese, English, and French. She also speaks a bit of Italian. Contrary to popular belief, she does not speak Spanish. She has denied being able to speak Spanish, and when asked in videos to speak the language, she expresses only a few words.[24] In her free time, she loves reading a novel by her favorite author, Gabriel Garcia Marquez.[3] Although she has appeared in a few commercials with cars, all of which were completed with the help of a green screen, she has admitted that she does not actually have a driver's license and has yet to learn how to drive.[25]

Lima has admitted that she was shy around boys when she was younger, not receiving her first kiss until she was 17 years old. They were watching a movie, and after the boy kissed her, he went directly to her mother to ask if he could marry her.[26] She did not care to wear shorts because she felt that boys did not like them. She still hides her legs because of that fear.[27] In an interview with GQ in the April 2006 issue, Lima told the magazine that she is a devoted Catholic who attends church every Sunday and is a virgin. "Sex is for after marriage," she explained. "They [men] have to respect that this is my choice. If there's no respect, that means they don't want me."[28] US GQ dubbed her as "The World's Most Voluptuous Virgin."[29]

Lima works out regularly. She jumps rope, does cardio, and has a custom-tailored boxing routine.[30] She admits to eating healthfully and in the past being on carb diets. Her weakness is meat, but she does not like hot dogs.[31]

Lima has been romantically linked to other celebrities in the past, including rocker Lenny Kravitz,[29] Prince Wenzeslaus of Liechtenstein,[23] and Denny of Timbalada.

She is good friends with Nigerian model Oluchi Onweagba.

Currently, Lima is engaged to Serbian basketball player Marko Jarić of the NBA Memphis Grizzlies.[32] The wedding is planned for June of 2009.[33]

Lima has admitted to loving children and plans on having four of her own some day.[33]

Lima's inspirations are Bettie Page and Marilyn Monroe.[33]

Lima owns a small dog by the name of Ivy[33] and two cats, Huguiño and Luisiño.[33]

Religious, she attends church every Sunday and even studied to become a nun. She takes a Bible backstage to read with her.[33]

She was voted as the Most Desirable Woman in 2005 by visitors of the men's lifestyle website, Askmen.com (she was placed 4th in 2006, also 4th in 2007 and 10th in 2008).

Charity

Lima does charitable work helping with an orphanage, "Caminhos da Luz" (Ways of Light), located in her hometown. She helps with construction to expand the orphanage, and buys clothes for poor children in Salvador, Bahia. She also stands for animal rights.[12]
