p.s. RIP: Malcom McLaren. ** David, Thank you kindly, David. Wait, where is this short fiction on your blog? I didn't see it. It's positively topsy turvy that you have a content warning on your blog, and I don't have one on mine. ** The Dreadful Flying Glove, Oh, I remember that 'Spirit of Rock' comp. It was everywhere, but I don't think I ever owned it for some strange reason. Birtha! Now, that's a band I haven't thought of in a long, long while. Sort of rootsy, I think. Were Stone the Crows good? I can't remember anymore. I think maybe, hm, not so much? Do you mean the Gene Wilder film, 'Willy Wonka'? If so, I know and love it like the back of my hand. Another Day, really? Oh, marvelous, oh, thank you thank you! ** Put The Lotion In The Basket, You seem more peppy, for sure. That's music to my ... eyes, I guess. But the eyes are, you know, the windows of the soul and all that. Holding stuff back is super important. Even I, Mr. Hugs, hold plenty of things back. That is a great Siouxie song. I love me some Banshees big time too. If I had to pick a fave S&tB song at this very second, it might be, hm, either 'Skin' or 'Carcass'. ** Misanthrope, The only sort of cool thing about Stars On Ice is the title's double meaning. Does the Ice Capades still exist? Okay, am I blanking out? What is 'goatse'? ** Bernard Welt, I was saving the pornographic and XXXtreme for today. Sorry for the wait. Is it okay to ask which Tim and Donald poems you read? ** David Ehrenstein, That really was a very good Manhola Dargis piece on Dennis Hopper. Thanks much for the alert. Oh, well, I'm glad that piece on Vito will appear somewhere. 'Stupid Things': excellent title, might I add. ** Oscar B, I want to see this Peter Pan puzzle. Do you still have it? Is it here? Talk to you in a bit. ** Empty Frame, Nice ruraldom there. Thanks to your descriptive wizardry, I could feel it in my timbers. Oh, what is the name of that Paris hotel where you're staying again? D.l. Creative Massacre was asking yesterday about good, inexpensive Paris hotels, and I couldn't call up the name. Can you post it here today and help her out? I know Angela de la Cruz's stuff just a little, some pix of it and some talk/writing about it only. My probably false first impression is that it's maybe kind of a little gimmicky, but I could so easily be mistaken. Much love back to you from here, here where you will be. ** Tonyoneill, Hey, Tony. I'm terrible at jigsaw puzzles. Video games ruined me. ** L@rstonovich, Hey. Mm, yeah, that wait must be ultra-frustrating. The analog does have its ups and downs. Well, anytime, whenever, etc. on the post, of course. I'm just excited like you are. ** Trees, Hey, Trees. Wow, a paper on independent record labels. Not a bad assignment as such things go. Does he want to write or do something re: record labels or what? I think confusion is the truth, except sometimes when I'm feeling it, ha ha. Yes, the Fang post arrived safely, and it's really great, and unless something changes, it'll appear here on Wednesday the 21st. If something does change, I'll send you an email. Thanks! Really looking forward to seeing that writing of yours, need I say? ** _Black_Acrylic, What constitutes posh art world specs at the moment? I think granny glasses are due for a big comeback. I'm not big on Chicks for Speed either, but, hm, maybe the right art space can drag something out of them? Enjoys Leeds if possible. ** Steevee, Really? I mean on the 'Date Night' commercial? Yikes, sorry. Well, it could have been both sexual tension and social awkwardness. They've definitely been known to hold hands. ** Joseph, Hi, J. Oh, The Big Pink, yeah. That sleeve image on their early single wasn't a photo taken by me; it's a page from one of the scrapbooks I made while writing my George Miles Cycle books. It's sort of a collage. Yes, they're cool, and, yes, they seem to really like my books, which is cool since I really like their music. A nice coincidence. That paper you're writing certainly sounds very impressive, title-wise, and, yeah, like hard work to boot. Show those freshman what they're made of, man. ** Jeff, Hey. Yeah, I think I most remember you talking about Ligotti's website and how rich and interesting it is. I'm going to investigate. I'll look into David Benatar too. That name is completely new to me. Thanks, Jeff. Almost everyone I know who has read Ligotti says 'Teatro ...' is his best book. That's why I'm starting there. I'm very curious. I don't know anyone who's read his work who doesn't rave about it. So how was the AWP experience? Wait, I just saw your late breaking comment, so never mind on the question. That was a great report, man. Thank you! I think you've got reporter in your blood. Man, I so wish I was there. So many amazing writers. It's like the unfolding of literature's future. I bet your expired ID would work, no? It's probably just a technical need. They'll probably just glance it at. I don't know. Awesome about winning the raffle, and that shirt's not bad at all. Very cool, Jeff. Really, thank you a lot. ** Chris Goode, I think that's how you type doozy. That was really your first time? Gosh, the word seems so you in some way. Yes, Malcom McLaren, that really sucks. My friend Scott met him a few months ago, and Scott mentioned to him how I think Bow Wow Wow is one of the greatest art projects ever, and there was a vague plan that McLaren and I might meet up next time he was in Paris so I could ask him a million questions about his work with Bow Wow Wow. Anyway, the world is notably emptier today. ** Killer Luka, Hey! So nice to see you, pal! Damn, I didn't even think about the Hellraiser puzzle. That would so have been in there. Maybe I can do a follow up just about puzzle doors to hell. I'm super glad you're drawing! I want to see. And, wow, you're back to your children's book! That's such a good thing for you to have done. Happy making news, that. I saw ads for that Spartacus TV show when I was in LA. I need to get a Netflix account pronto. Unless they don't service France, and I bet they don't. If you hear how Steadman's eyes react to your portfolio, please pass the reaction on, okay? Big, big love to you. ** Bill, Hey, Bill! Hamburg, what's that like? When I think Hamburg, I think very gloomy and very industrial, but I don't know why. Shame you aren't here this weekend to go to the Nemo festival at Centquatre. It's pretty terrific so far. I think you'd dig it to some degree. ** Justin, With the Russian sites, it's not that the fetishes themselves are so out there but rather that the spin they put on standard fetishes can be so bizarre and/or interestingly depressing. Like the milk enema site. I can't remember its name. It has words milk and either boys or twinks in the title. First, there's the milk. Then there's the room they do the enemas in, which looks sort of like a cross between a 1950s 'home of the future' and a McDonalds Playland. And then there's the crazed silent movie style acting of the models, trying to catch the gush of milk in a bowl and so on. And etc. Yeah, about McLaren. And super yeah about the sublime Bow Wow Wow. ** Paul Curran, Hi, Paul. Oh, very interesting and thanks so much about the way my novels begin. I do go for that quality, of course. In the new one, the 'texts in aftermath' thing -- great phrase! -- is very deliberate, very literal. Mm, too complicated to explain in this situation. But, yeah, thank you. I hope I hope I hope I'm not fooling myself. I'm not to the point where I'm sure about that yet, but the signs are fairly positive. ** Changeling, Hey, man! Nice to see you. That puzzle for the blind child thing is beautiful. You should employ in that in a piece of your writing maybe. Speaking of which, 'Luck' is really terrific. Such a pleasure. ** Chilly Jay Chill, What happens to the books in those closed libraries? Scary. Man, I can't tell you how very interesting that novel-related event sounds. Will you document it? I'd love to see any evidence or hear about how it went, if you don't mind. On the self-consciousness thing, hm, I don't know. For me it's like pretending I'm alone in a room and, at the same time, thinking about nothing else but how to make the text sound the best it can. Like trying to remove both yourself and the audience from the situation in a way. Mm, I know how to do it because I found a way over the years, but I don't how to describe the way to achieve that strange state. You'll be fine, Jeff, no doubt. I haven't scored the new New Pornographers. Gosh, I probably can now, can't I? I'm super excited for it. Otherwise, I'm not listening to much right now. I'm so concentrated on the novel editing that the air around me might as well not exist no matter how it sounds, if that makes sense. What are you listening to now? ** Little foal, Oh, hi, man. I was so happy to see the great reaction to your amazing post. It really was such an honor for me. As others said, any time you ever want to share your work or something in a blog post here again, I'd be thrilled. Thanks about the font. Believe it or not, it's the default font. I used to switch fonts on my old blog, but I ended up thinking this one was the most, I don't know, versatile? Really nice about your old friend. That was moving. Mm, oh, I see with the other friend. Well, I guess it's good to be careful and to be as sure as you can be, but just remember you can't be totally sure until the exact feeling of being in a relationship with the 'new' guy is active and real again. Maybe if you're really clear with him, he'd be willing to become involved again on a trial kind of basis? Hm, it's tricky, isn't it. Let me know what you decide and what happens, yeah? Have a fine day, my friend. ** Creative Massacre, Oh, yikes, about the baking mishap. That must have been so stressful and disappointing, but I'm glad the Chef somewhat saved the day. One of the d.l.s, Empty Frame, is going to stay in an affordable hotel in a fantastic location in Paris. I asked him up above to please post the name and info on that hotel so you can see it, so I hope he will, and watch for that. Otherwise, I can come up with some suggestions, and I can certainly help with the locations, so feel more than free to run them by me. Sometimes hotels will say they're near this or that monument or whatever when they're not all that close in reality. Anyway, let's see if Empty Frame passes along that hotel info because it sounded like a sweet deal, and, if he doesn't, I'll do whatever I can to help. ** Alan, Yeah, the 'trippy' was about the Curran/ Cooper combo and weird coincidence. I should scour 'Jabberwocky's' imdb page to see if there are any more puzzle pieces. Well, that is great news and a huge relief about your mom's absence of that gene. And thank god that hunches are too entangled in one's psychology to be reliable. My hunch is that you'll die at 104 years-old after being trampled to death by teenaged girl fans with large, amazing looking noses. ** Amccartney, Hey, Alistair! It so sucks that I didn't get to see you in LA. I have this awful habit when I visit of waiting to see my pals in the last half of my trips, and, in this case, illness dashed my poorly planned out plans. Paris is nice, warming up bit by bit. When are you and Tim going to come visit? The Tate murder, very interesting. Is it possible to say what the new novel is, ugh, 'about'? I hate that question, but here I am wanting to know in your case. ** Sypha, Oh, I will. Yeah, so what were your family members' reactions? I guess it's probably too early to ask, but, yeah, I'm interesting to know. ** No more teenagekicks, Oh, Tiger Trap. Nice call. Wow, I haven't re-listened to them in ages. It sounds good. Mm, yum about Kevin and Dodie's reading. I wonder if Dodie's thing is from her new novel. Anxious for that baby. It's so weird that Tim Griffin is a poet. I mean, you know, he's the editor of Artforum, and that identity plus poet identity is odd, interesting odd. Oh, I should pass on your 'Twin Peaks' thing. Everyone, alert, listen to what No More teenagekicks has to say to all of us: 'happy 20th anniversary, twin peaks. via scott heims facebook, this blog has, ostensibly only for today, free downloads of four twin peaks songs that were not on the official soundtrack.' Thanks a whole bunch, M. ** Inthemostpeculiarway, I think you'd like real waffle iron-made waffles, but then you might never want to eat frozen waffles again, and that might be sad. No, I don't have any room in my tiny room for a dinosaur artwork anyway. They're really big, like the size of baby elephants. Your paragraph about dark and bed and hope and light and all of that was beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. You are our Proust. Hm, I don't know why, but in my mental image of Bendy, him saying 'that's fucked, dude' is so out of character. I think I've got him all wrong. I like that he said that, btw. 'Delta of Venus' is 'disgusting, awful, repulsive', ha ha. That's funny. I'm so jaded. My day: Uh, things are firmed up with Christophe Honore about the film thing, so that's cool. He liked my idea, and he refined it into something better, and now I have to make notes and stuff so I don't blank out in terror when the cameras start rolling. I think I worked on my novel all day, didn't I? Yeah, I did. Nothing dramatic or interesting. At 7: 30, Oscar and I went to the opening of the 'Nemo' festival at Centquatre. Kiddiepunk and Scott declined. We met up with Yury and his friend Lena there. I drank a beer, which is very, very unusual. Well, I didn't drink the whole beer because I got tipsy fast since I almost never drink. The event was really cool. There were five or six big installation/ projection/ sound pieces, and a couple of them were open all evening, and the others only happened a few times, so we moved from place to place, waiting line to waiting line to see them. I think our favorites were some really funny, fucked up cgi/3D video projection things that would be hard to describe, but they were pretty trippy and hilarious. Anyway, we wandered around there looking at stuff until it closed. I think some of us are going back to Nemo on Saturday night, 'cos the stuff that night looks especially promising. By the time I got home, it was bedtime, so I surrendered to my fate. I didn't describe that very well. If I go again on Saturday, I'll do better. In the meantime ... Friday? ** JW Veldhoen, Shyness'll kill you, man. Be careful. Mm, while your being glad is always a good thing, in the case of McLaren's death, I don't think it was worth the cost. ** Math, Pal, hi. Music that both Yury and I like? Not a ton, ha ha. Let's see ... I'm not that into Klaxons. They're kind of meh to me. Anyway, we both like Pet Shops Boys, It Isn't, some 90s intelligent techno stuff, the new Gorillaz album, Joy Division, New Order, one song by The Horrors, ... a few others I can't think of. Love, love to you. ** Blendin, Oh, shit, man. That sounds like some kind of sickness. Not wussy at all. What is it exactly? I'm glad you get to stay home. Does someone else run the newsstand when you can't? Man, you've got my luck, almost all of it. Tell me the latest. ** I must go now. No, really, I must. Oh, the post, ha ha. People who've been following the blog for ages will recall that Ton used to be regular figure, reference, etc. here back in the blog's randier days. Well, his curious career has hit the eight year mark, and in Russian porn star lifespan terms, that's practically immortality, and I wanted to mark the occasion and illustrate his strange trajectory. That's the deal. See you tomorrow.
