Recent figures from the the federal Department of Education say that more than 200,000 students each year are subjected to corporal punishment. According to the Congressional testimony, up to 20,000 students a year seek medical attention after the event. Generally, the injuries involve bruising and broken blood vessels.When fashion designer Marc Ecko heard that corporal punishment was still legal, he decided to act. Starting today, he’s putting up billboards and launching a website and mobile app that he hopes will allow tens of thousands of young people to bombard lawmakers with e-mails, faxes and phone calls demanding change. “There are just certain habits and cycles that are worth breaking,” he said.And on that note I thik this guy is an idiot. The average cost of gas has jumped to $3.52 per gallon, up from $3.38 per gallon last week and 77 cents higher than a year ago. It is the highest price ever posted during the month of March. And it could cost even more, depending on location. At Suncoast Energys' gas station in Orlando, Fla., gas prices have surpassed the $5 mark: $5.39 a gallon for regular and $5.49 for premium. Suncoast is among the last gas stations for travelers heading to the Orlando airport, making it a prime spot for customers in a pinch. Over the past couple of days a baby grand piano, parked on a sliver of a sandbar in Miami's Biscayne Bay, launched a thousand ships (ok, little pleasure boats), twitter accounts and countless rumors. In the end This little installation of junk art, as it's known, was the brainchild of a 16-year-old. Nicholas Harrington is a junior at Mast Academy in Key Biscayne. His accomplices were his brother Andrew and neighbor Julian Roots, both 18. They claim that since the piano has become famous, they will motor back out to the sandbar and remove it.Just another case of bored rich kids with nothing better to do.-AL

It was revealed today on the Oprah Winfrey show that she has a half-sister that she never knew about named Patricia on her mothers side. Patricia was given up for adoption by Oprah’s mother Vernita when Oprah was nine years old. The two met at Thanksgiving last year. I bet her sister is saying on the inside, JACKPOT!!!!!!!!!!-AL

Jim Jablon will spend all of January inside an enclosure with two African lions as part of an effort to raise funds for a Florida wildlife rehabilitation center struggling to meet operating costs.The cats -- a 2-year-old named Lea and a 1-year-old named Ed -- are young and playful, but they're also powerful and their caretaker sometimes feels over-matched."I'm still a toy to them," said Jablon, the longtime owner of Wildlife Rehabilitation of Hernando in Spring Hill, Fla. "They can be out cold and I'll sneak up between them and lay down, but as soon as they realize I'm there it's the battle of the bands. Jablon, who does have a "lockout area" in which he can find refuge if things get too rough, countered that he doesn't feel threatened by the lions and pointed out that if the facility were to shut down, animals that were not accepted by other facilities probably would be put to death.It costs about $75,000 annually to care for the 100 animals at the 14-acre center and Jablon says car washes and other small-scale fund-raisers are no longer sufficient. He hopes people visiting his website and watching the streaming video will feel motivated to make a donation.
