Marriage: Bad Idea? Or Worst Idea Ever?

Last Saturday on I'm With Stupid (what? So it took me a few days to get this posted) Matt-Man and I pretty much settled the whole “should people get married, stay single or just shack up?” question. The results are 1. shack up, 2. stay single and 3. get married if you must.

Seriously people, marriage just sucks and we all know it. Well, for everyone except you and you and .. you're lying so not you. You get the picture. After listening to Matt-Man run down all the ominous signs that he should have picked up on before the wedding and during the honeymoon, but didn't, marriage sounds very scary.

We also had an ad from our new Marriage and Divorce Planning Services business venture as well as a live report from Kim Fragile. All that and so damn much more fun and jocularity. Oh and BTR had a technical glitch and didn't cut us off at 45 minutes like usual. Boy are they sorry that happened. And so are we. We 66 minutes, which was 65 20 minutes too long.

Anyway, give it a listen if you need some quality entertainment at a fair price.

Guest Blogger: Sister Gladiola Moriancumer Young

I am Gladiola Moriancumer Young and I will be posting here as occasion calls. I must say that I, for one, am quite pleased that the Pearson formerly known as "Sister" has been without Internet for the past several days. Clearly it was God's will, as I think we have heard quite enough from her on the topic of that so-called Proposition 8.

Brothers and Sisters, Satan has clearly won this round. But, make no mistake, we will keep fighting. You may think that all the money that The Only True Church exhausted from it's members was collected in vain. Not so. The Lord demanded that we sacrifice all within our time and our means and we did. Now we may all stand blameless before God and be lifted up on the day that the world is consumed by fire because of those gays. And that day will come. Mark my words.

It was no accident that it poured rain here in Utah the day the plague of gay marriage was, once again, visited upon California. God and his wives were weeping in their Heavens. And I tell you what, my sister and I pulled the drapes and spent considerable time on our knees when we saw that giant double rainbow that Satan painted over the Lord's Only True City. Some said it was beautiful, but I would not be deceived. I know pure evil when I see it.

Yes Sir, the Devil may have won the battle. The world may be celebrating. But me and my house, we will continue to prepare. For the end is upon us. The real storm is coming.

And we should all be very, very afraid.

Danielle Don't Do It

Amendment to the amendment to the Equal Opportunity Fairy Tale...

...But, behold, if a Prince or Princess are royally gay - they shall not marry one another but shall be the best of friends. They shall travel to a state where ogres do not dwell and the handsome Prince will wed another handsome Prince and the beautiful Princess will wed another beautiful princess. And there shall be much merriment and equality and full bank accounts and properly placed toilet seats. And there will be farting.

And, yes, they too shall live Happily Ever After.

Amen.

Bringing Out The Big Guns

I have so many things I am really trying to wean myself off of: a ridiculous sugar addiction, the mocking of those considerably smaller than me, always marching at the head of the big, gay rights parade...

I know I am far too often Nellie The One Note Fairy Princess but I look around me and I just don't get it. Mormons and Catholics are now officially banning together in their fight to "Defend Religious Freedom."

How is this about religious freedom??? I really want to know.

In his talk to 12,000 BYU students on Tuesday, Cardinal Francis George, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, said “In recent years, Catholics and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints have stood more frequently side by side in the public square to defend human life and dignity." But whose human life and dignity are they defending? Their own. They are only interested in defending those that are like them - those that believe and live as they do. Really??? That's what Jesus Christ - the radical and unbelievably loving and accepting and compassionate being that you proclaim you follow - taught??? Really???

Gay Marriage and Religious Freedom are two completely separate issues but the more that religious leaders lump them together and rally and frighten their mobs, the less likely they are to actually think it through for themselves.

Gay marriage DOES NOT pose anymore of a threat to the world than freeing the slaves, allowing women to vote, allowing blacks the same rights as whites or interracial marriage did. All of those things were going to bring about the end of civilization and they did not. Nor will this.

I know that there are readers of this blog that do not support gay marriage -religious individuals that absolutely believe that their religious freedom is being threatened. PROVE IT. I mean that sincerely. I have yet to find one person who can give me a good argument besides "God says so." I am absolutely baffled by the religious freedom argument. If you believe that gay marriage threatens your religious freedom, I am sincerely begging you to explain to me how. Post anonymously so you won't be personally attacked. And, I don't want to hear "Because God says..." or "Gays are evil therefore..." I really want to know how your religious freedom is threatened by two men or two women getting married.

Cardinal George also said "But when Prop. 8 opponents respond by thuggery, by quasi-fascist tactics, then the common good, our whole society, stands in great jeopardy." Forget counting to ten. I could count to one million and still be furious about this statement. Gay individuals were going about their business of loving one another and picking out china patterns, without giving the second thought of a rats ass about the Mormon Church, when it swooped in and took away one of their basic human rights. What about taking away the separation of church and state and allowing religions to dictate who gets what rights? What does that do to the common good and safety of society? If a religion can rally and strip rights from a group of people once, what's to stop them from doing it again? Who will be next?

The Mormons crying victim, yet again, is outrageous to me. A bully has been beating up kids on the playground for years. Making the smaller ones feel sad, lonely and unworthy. It has been kicking them, throwing sand in their eyes, pulling their hair, calling them names, getting groups of other bullies to follow them. At long last, those that were being bullied stood up, kicked the bully back and said NO MORE. Now that bully is sitting in the Principal's office blubbering with snot running down it's shirt crying about the "thugs and fascists" that were mean to it?

Are you fucking kidding me???

[Deep breath. Happy thoughts. Count to infinity...]

The World Is Flat And The Moon Is Made Of Cheese

I received an email from a man, former LDS bishop of a family friend, a few weeks ago that stunned me. I am honestly still too flabbergasted to respond to him.

...I'm afraid others might misconstrue my question as being other than a sincere question... I understand your concern with what you believe to be the Mormon Church's anti-gay stance. But what I don't understand, is if Proposition 8 had gone favorably toward gay marriage, how would that help gays not contract aids? Is this a dumb, rude or ignorant question? If it is I'm sorry.

Honestly, how does one respond to that question? Is it a dumb, rude and ignorant question? Umm... horrifyingly so. So much so that I cannot possibly respond to him with anything but - are you fucking kidding me? But I can't say that because, admittedly, I now feel held hostage by his niceness and sincerity. Or maybe I just feel sorry for him. Or maybe the anger the question triggers in me is so huge that I have to dismiss it before I allow it to burn the poor guy alive. Or maybe all the above.

But now I have my own questions. Is it okay to mask bigotry and ignorance in niceness? Does that suddenly make it okay? Ignorance is just a cry for education, right? There are plenty of things about which I am embarrassingly ignorant - so many things I don't know that I absolutely should. It should be easy to just reply with a friendly, "Sweetie, AIDS stopped being a gay disease about 20+ years ago. Condoms and responsibility are what help ALL sexually active people not contract AIDS - not just the gays. Thanks for asking." But I can't. This is far too much of an emotional trigger for me. It was that level of ignorance in making and passing laws about basic human rights that made so many of us so angry about Prop 8.

Is it really that hard to think something through and come to an obvious and logical answer? Sadly, for many - including myself, sometimes the answer is yes. I didn't really even know how to truly think for myself, on most topics, until 7-ish years ago. I either looked to what my church taught about it or I just dismissed it. Too much in my life didn't make sense - thinking about it all just made me feel crazier than I already did. But the ability to think is a gift. The ability to stretch and challenge one's mind is something too many of us leave sitting on the dashboard alongside our hula dolls, roach clips and Garfield toys.

Like I said, there are many facts about politics, math, science, geography, history and the workings of the world I live in that I absolutely should know but don't. I have given cause for others to look at me many a time and ask, "Are you fucking kidding me?" I'm doing the best I can, shouldn't I allow others the same? Of course.

But, when it comes to gay marriage causing AIDS or a black president causing an increase in basketball and watermelon consumption - shouldn't we be doing better?

Legally One

The other night, my kids and I went to the wedding reception of a gay couple that we are absolutely head over heels for. If you asked my children who their favorite humans on the planet are, these two would both be near the top of the list. For me, there are no words...

Without question they have the relationship I dream of having.

They flew to Boston and were legally married. The justice of the peace that performed their ceremony told them that not one word had been changed for gay marriages - word for word the vows are the same for straight and gay couples. Their reception, attended by family and friends (many of the LDS faith) was held in a very classy Salt Lake cafe. There was delicious food, drinks, music, candles and tree lights, laughter, tears and happy-happy-joy-joy.

And, behold, the sky did not fall.

More Penguin Proof

Many of you will remember the gay penguin couple that was stealing eggs at the zoo in China. While I still think that stealing another's offspring is just plain bad form (unless of course said offspring is born to sixteen year old crack whores) I am still thrilled that there are more and more examples of our little gay tuxedoed friends coupling up and being responsible and loving parents.

The latest:

Gay Penguin Pair Adopt Abandoned Chick
German Zoo Gave Z and Vielpunkt, a Pair of Gay Humboldt Penguins, an Abandoned Egg to Care For.

By Stephanie Rogers

The egg was vulnerable and helpless, abandoned by its parents and in need of warmth to survive. So officials at a German zoo gave it to a pair of gay male Humboldt penguins, named Z and Vielpunkt, who took it in and nestled it until it hatched in May. Now, the pair is happily raising the four-week-old chick.

"Z and Vielpunkt, both males, gladly accepted their 'Easter gift' and got straight down to raising it," said a zoo statement.

"Since the chick arrived, they have been behaving just as you would expect a heterosexual couple to do. The two happy fathers spend their days attentively protecting, caring for and feeding their adopted offspring."

Z and Vielpunkt aren’t the first of their kind, or even the only gay penguins at the zoo in Bremerhaven, northern Germany. In 2005, three pairs of male penguins had been seen at the zoo trying to mate and sitting on stones in lieu of eggs. It was also reported last fall that a pair of male penguins at a zoo in China was stealing eggs from heterosexual penguin couples.

Other famous gay penguin couples include Roy and Silo, the Central Park Zoo pair that inspired the book And Tango Makes Three.

Homosexuality has been documented in a range of animal species, but has not been studied in-depth.

"Homosexuality is nothing unusual among animals," Bremerhaven zoo said on Wednesday.

"Sex and coupling up in our world do not necessarily have anything to do with reproduction."

Amen. And Amen.

Careful Where You Step

Such great comments are being made on the No Crown For You post. Gay Marriage is a highly charged, very emotional, topic - for both sides. Any conversation between the For-bies and the Against-ers is going to be a walk on a mine field. Yes, we are all - including me - throwing out opinions and arguments that are often fueled by anger. Those of us that have actually taken sides feel passionate about where we stand and we all have our reasons for believing as we do. And we are not going to agree - we just aren't. I love that Melinda admitted to being on the fence - she is actually thinking about it and using her brain to decide. She is taking it seriously and not being swayed by either her religious leaders NOR her obnoxious and loud blogger friend. She will figure it out for herself - as we all are.

Can we on the Pro side "Hate the belief, but love the believer" the same way they "Hate the Sin, but love the sinner?" I don't know. Depends on the relationship. Some are strong enough, some not. Welcome to the battle.

Candis made a good point about the comment "I've never heard anyone on the liberal side trying to use any sort of religious argument to convince people to allow gay marriage" when she said, "Uh. . . really? Did you happen to read the last sentence of the blog post you're commenting on?" I did throw Jesus in the pot there, didn't I? Yeah, that was my dig in response to the many religious arguments being used against gay marriage. But there is no point in throwing the "Jesus Said" rocks at one another - again, we are NEVER going to agree. For those of us on the Pro side, this is not a religious issue. It is a human rights issue. Period. To those on the Against side it is not a human rights issue. It is a religious issue. Period.

There is a book that I have heard is amazing. I have purchased it but have not yet had the time to read it. It is called "Gay Marriage: Why It Is Good for Gays, Good for Straights, and Good for America" by Jonathan Rauch. It is supposed to be very logical and even handed. Anyone read it that would like to comment? If anyone would like to read it and comment I would be more than happy to post your review / thoughts.

You all know why this is such an emotional issue for me. And, while 99.9% of the Against arguments make absolutely no sense to me at all, I do understand why they make sense to others. The one I do not get is the Threat to the Family one. I simply, logically, do not understand how a gay couple getting to create their own legal family unit threatens anyone else's family unit. Please, someone help me understand that one. I don't want to hear "Churches will be forced..." "Schools will be forced..." arguments. How does it threaten other families??? Help me understand that one.

* Side Note: Yeah, even I'm getting tired of blogging about this issue. I need to go on a date with a hillbilly and mix things up a bit. Actually, that is the absolute last thing I need. Never mind.

No Crown For You

Miss Calif.: Anti-gay marriage answer 'Cost me my crown'
MSN Entertainment

Miss California Carrie Prejean thinks her anti-same sex marriage opinion cost her the Miss USA title on Sunday.

In an interview on Monday's Billy Bush Show Prejean stated: "It did cost me my crown. I wouldn't have had it any other way. I said what I feel. I stated an opinion that was true to myself and that's all I can do."

During the show, celebrity judge Perez Hilton asked Prejean on whether she thought same-sex marriage should be legalized. Prejean replied: "In my country, and in my family, I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman." Prejean later lost to Miss North Carolina Kristen Dalton, who took home the crown.

"It is a very touchy subject and (Hilton) is a homosexual and I see where he was coming from and I see the audience would've wanted me to be more politically correct," she said. "But I was raised in a way that you can never compromise your beliefs and your opinions for anything."

Even though her answer stirred up some controversy, Prejean said she still felt like she won the competition.

"I feel like I'm the winner. I really do," Prejean said, mentioning that she had more than 200 friend requests and 1,000 new messages on Facebook.

A lot of people, many friends of mine included, are really pissed off at her. Being the gay rights megaphone that I am, you'd think I would want to 2X4 her. Strangely, I'm not pissed off or surprised - just more and more determined to keep pushing forward. And, you know what? I find it weirdly refreshing that she at least stood where she stood and spoke what was true for her - right in the face of a gay man and in a industry largely run, and supported by, gay men. That took serious balls. Not that I agree with her in the tiniest little bit. I do not think she stood as a beacon for righteousness and protection of the almighty and oh-so-horribly threatened family. Her truth is bigotry. But I am so tired of people talking out of one side of their mouths out of fear, and in order to be politically correct, and then turning round in private and rolling their eyes and bashing the gays. That happens way too much - here in Utah especially.

People that oppose gay rights and gay marriage are standing firm all over the place. Fine. Good for them. It is better than being two faced pussies about it. But they must also know that there are now consequences for doing so. Friends of mine, gay and straight, have chosen out of long time friendships with people that are clinging to their bigotry. I have not had to yet. People kind of know not to step on that land mine with me. And, they understand why I feel the way I feel. It used to be the case that those of us that supported gay rights would keep our mouths shut and say to ourselves, "They don't know any better, it's what they have been taught. Just let them be." No more. Prop 8 crossed the line and no one is taking it anymore.

Those individuals that discriminate against gays do not yet see that it is no different than discriminating against women, blacks, Jews... the list goes on and on. And they may never see it in this lifetime. But they do need to know, here and now, that they can no longer open their mouths, judge and condemn people, and expect to be awarded for it. There are no crowns being given out for hatred.

They will continue to praise each other and give one another big pats on the back. They will support one another in their fear and judgement and convince themselves that it is okay because they are on the Lord's errand. They are standing for truth and know that their treasure, their crown, is in heaven.

I just think they are going to be more than a little surprised when they finally leave this life and sit down for a little chat with Jesus. What did he teach, again? Oh, yeah...

Yey Iowa!

Iowa Supreme court legalized gay marriage yesterday. You oughta see my happy dance - it's sweet. By the way Utah, in this case, last will NOT be the best of all the game.

Again??? Seriously???

The following official email was just sent out (via the LDS Church website) to all the members of the Nauvoo 3rd Ward, as approved by Kristy Combs, ward website administrator, and by Bishop Chris Church of the Nauvoo 3rd Ward. (Because it was sent through the LDS website, it required the authorization of a bishop or higher.) Thanks Connell.

This message has been authorized for sending by Bishop Church.

The Civil Union Bill (HB 2234) has been scheduled for a hearing in the Youth and Family Committee this week on Thursday, March 5, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. in Springfield. If the bill is voted out of committee, it becomes eligible for a vote before the full Illinois House of Representatives. This bill will legalize civil unions in the state of Illinois, and will treat such civil unions with the same legal obligations, responsibilities, protections and benefits as are afforded within marriage. In other words, civil unions will be different in name only from marriage. As has already been seen in Massachusetts, this will empower the public schools to begin teaching this lifestyle to our young children regardless of parental requests otherwise. It will also create grounds for rewriting all social mores; the current push in Massachusetts is to recognize and legalize all transgender rights (An individual in Massachusetts can now change their drivers license to the gender they believe themselves to be, regardless of actual gender, which means that confused men and women are now legally entering one another's bathrooms and locker rooms. What kind of a safety issue is this for our children?). Furthermore, while the bill legalizes civil unions, it will be used in the courts to show discrimination and will ultimately lead to court mandated same-sex marriages.

To help defeat this bill, please call your state representative and state senator and ask that they support traditional marriage and vote against the civil unions bill. If you are unsure who your legislators are, please see the link at the end of this email.

Also, please take a moment and call the following members of the Youth and Family Committee to encourage them to vote no on this bill. We need 4 votes to keep it from passing out of the committee. And - as always, please pass this on to all who believe in protecting our families and our children. If you are interested in attending the hearing, it will be held on Thursday, March 5th at 9:00 a.m. in Springfield in Room 122B of the Capitol Building (I can give you directions to the Capitol Building if needed).

Members of the Youth and Family Committee:
Rep. Greg Harris (D-Chicago) (Greg Harris is also the sponsor of this bill, but he needs to hear your opposition to this bill)
Chairperson
217-782-3835

Rep. LaShawn K. Ford (D-Chicago)
Vice-Chairperson
217-782-5962

Rep. Mike Fortner (R-West Chicago)
Republican Spokesperson
217-782-1653

Rep. William D. Burns (D-Chicago)

Rep. Michael P. McAuliffe (R-Chicago)

Rep. Al Riley (D-Matteson)
217-558-1007

Rep. Dave Winters (R-Rockford)

Directions for identifying your legislators:
You can use the following link to identify your state legislators and their contact information: http://www.elections.il.gov/DistrictLocator/SelectSearchType.aspx?NavLink=1 (and enter your 9 digit zip code). If this link doesn't work, you can use the general link www.ilga.gov and then click on " legislator lookup" near the bottom of the page, then click on "by zip+4". Type in your zip code, and you'll see a list of your legislators. You want your state senator and state representative as they will be the ones voting on the bill.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Sister Combs

Oh my God! I love how the passing of gay civil unions means that gay porn will be shown in Kindergarten and men dressed as women will begin running in and out of bathrooms and locker rooms harming children. Guess what? Kids these days already know about gays. There is no stopping the information that gays exist and that sexual relationships are an option for these people. Schools are NOT going to start pushing the gay lifestyle and teaching kids about anal sex. They are going to teach gay sex against parents wishes? Bullshit. We parents have to sign Sex Ed permission slips for heterosexual classes. You really think that there would be no choice even if they did offer How to Homo 101?

And the dangers of transgendered individuals? Please! These people exist now. There is a bit of confusion and staring but, really, how aware of it on a daily basis are you Sister Combs and Bishop Church? Exactly how many transgendered people do you see around you in Nauvoo? Are gay civil unions going to suddenly make men dressed as women, and vice versa, multiply and replenish the earth and take over mirror time in the bathrooms at the Megaplex? Nay. There are transgendered kids that I know of in a couple of Junior High schools, both here in Utah (imagine THAT poor kid!) and in California. The teachers are aware of it and the kids do not use the "wrong" locker and bathrooms. They use the teachers lounge. No one is uncomfortable and the kid in question is safe. Honestly, the only real concern is the poor transgendered kid getting the shit beat of them. Straight kids can be brutal and FAR more of a danger to a gay or transgendered kid than the other way around. Trust me. If the Trannies take over the planet they will most likely get their own bathrooms and stickers on their drivers licenses. Problem solved.

Civil unions will not change one damn thing in that little Nauvoo bubble you live in. Do I have any questions for you, Sister Combs?

You bet your big, fat beehive I do.

All That And A Penis Ta-boot

Okay, so check out Ru Paul.

This video does NOT, by the way, mean that all gay men are drag queens and when gay marriage is finally legal that all the streets in all the world will become gay disco clubs. But, how totally awesome would that be???

I've never really been a huge Ru Paul fan. No idea why, since I am the world's biggest Fairy Princess and she is the world's biggest Fairy Queen. My friend Jeff, the Giant Iraq War Vet I stormed the temple with last fall (okay, we just marched with 3,000 other people but the image of me storming the temple makes me laugh - so stormed it is), is a good friend of Ru's and has all these amazing pictures of him dressed in Ru's dresses, wigs and make-up. Jeff's a United States Marine - and he looks freaking amazing.

He showed me videos of Ru Paul and I was flat out pissed that a MAN looks that curvaceous, glamorous and hot as hell. I understand that it takes make-up, costumes, camera angles, lighting and an entire crew to get him to look like that - and I'm not sure that, even if I could end my passionate love affair with baked goods, I would want to look like Ru Paul - but still... DAMN.
