p.s. Hey. Today, the man who has the magic touch with just about every art form aka d.l. Michael Karo does double duty as your VJ- and composer-in-residence, so please enjoy the show via your glistening eyes, head banging, foot taps, interpretative dance steps, and so on, and then report back to the man in charge please. Thanks, and my heartiest thanks to you, Mr. K. Sorry about the internet weirdness. I even forgot to italicize the italics-deserving p.s. segments in the confusion. Here's hoping everything is normalized on the signal front and that we'll get through today and the future sans further technological screw ups. That said, it is exile/ cleaning day here, so if it's not one thing, it's another. ** David Ehrenstein, I think we're back. Yes, the LA rain is big news over here, and I'm heartsick at missing such a momentous occurrence. We're having a strange phase of normal winter weather over here this week. So far, anyway. Chauncey's DADT point is a good one, yes, for sure. Everyone, courtesy of David Ehrenstein, here's George Chauncey's excellent point about the DADT repeal. Thanks for that, David. ** Allesfliesst, Hey. Hope you made it there in as few hours as possible. We've dried up here for the moment. But, yes, our own Kiddiepunk was supposed to be in Australia right now, but he'll be celebrating Xmas sans vegemite in northern Italy instead thanks to the mighty snow. I guess I'm glad I'll be sitting pretty for the duration. Anyway, report in from ... wherever you land please. ** David, Hey, D. The electricity/ internet remains wobbly, but it's 'on' as of 9:43 am Paris time. Oh, I we have electric radiators here in the Recollets. Luckily, they're powered by some sort of emergency back up system, although, when the power is out, they're about as helpful as a candle. ** Paul Curran, Pacifist pirate, ha ha. How about a Harry Potter-style magic wand? No, ugh, my agent hasn't finished reading 'TMS' yet due to 'holidays, family', he says, and that's understandable and all, but it's driving me a bit batty, to be honest with you. So, I'm still checking my email constantly looking for said green light, pre-Xmas, I pray. ** MANCY, So, they are new. They're really beautiful. Some of the very best you've done. I think. So, congrats and thanks. Hope the money work isn't wearing you out too much. ** Pilgarlic, Hey. Oh, hold on, this is the aerial shot of Tybee Island that I was looking at. So, I'm guessing those brown areas are the grass and that the photo was taken in the dry season? The island looks really cozy and sweet. Wouldn't want to be there in a hurricane, though. Your new, temporary Florida digs sound interesting and kind of mythical. Oh, sure, I'd like to see that cartoon, you bet. ** Sypha, Oh, my mistake. I must have misread when your days off were, or I thought there was an 'off' where there wasn't. Thanks for the Xmas card, btw. It arrived here yesterday. Pretty swift for a US to Paris piece of mail. ** Killer Luka, Hey. Oh, I was wondering why you deleted. Oh, right, MP's cutting. I read something somewhere, a little q&a with him or something, where he talked about that and his struggles with that. He makes for a complicated porn star, which, of course, makes for complicated viewing, which is fascinating, although there is something worrisome there. ** Math, Yeah, outages are pretty cool. It left me really unprepared, though. I read some, wrote a bit. It would have been great if every single one of my Paris friends wasn't out of town for Xmas holidays and if it hadn't been freezing cold and raining. But I'm whining. Yeah, it was cool. I wish it had happened at night, though, for the reasons you mentioned. Our room has a sizable window, and we don't need to use indoor lighting, so when the power goes out during the day, the only way I know it's happening is if the little light ring on the power cord of my laptop suddenly changes from green to orange. It was Mark Doten's birthday? Happy birthday very late, Mark, if you're out there. Then, yeah, maybe I'll find a torrent of 'Black Swan', although it does have this kind of 'see it on a big screen' feel to it. Really nice to see you use the word 'stoked', pal. ** Hayden Derk, Hey. Oh, a late happy birthday to you! And I'm hoping by your comment that you managed to rescue your novel from your broken computer. (Obviously, I've been checking your blog). Wow, it's nice that you're a fellow lover of the 'Sea of Fertility' novels. It's kind of rare that I find a Mishima fan who's even read them. He considered them his major work, but they're kind of treated like an afterthought. Maybe it's just the intimidation factor vis a vis its/their size. Anyway, yeah, I agree about his big personality seeming to get in the work's way. But at least most people who like his work really love it, and that kind of passion is the ultimate accolade, more than big sales or being name-dropped all the time by the NYT or something, you know? That dividing and rearranging of your novel sounds interesting. How so and why, if it's not too complicated to explain? ** Bernard Welt, Hey, B. Yeah, the Panahi thing is terrible and disturbing. A lot of news and discussion about that here in France, no surprise. There was a three hour TV program just last night that was devoted entirely to the situation. ** Alan, Hey. Oh, man, I hope the fire didn't harm her possessions or cause her continuing to live there to be a problem. Very best of luck on that front. ** Toniok, Hey, man! Yeah, I grew up reading Mishima too, and, hm, well, I guess that makes sense, doesn't it, ha ha? Do you have anything interesting planned for Xmas? ** Kiddiepunk, Hey! Xmas in Italy. That's a switch. I'm sure you'll make the very best of it. It's weird and lonely here what with you, the big O, Scott, and Paul all gone. Plus, the Recollets is very quiet and deserted-ish 'cos of Xmas. The plus side is that internet is five times faster, when it's actually working, that is. After Friday, the widget weather forecast says there'll be no snow for a while, so hopefully your coinciding flights will get lucky. If not, just stay and keep me company for New Years. You know you want to! ** Chilly Jay Chill, That work on your new play sounds really, really fascinating, Jeff. I'm taking it that you're feeling pretty excited by and comfortable with the 'play' form? Very curious to hear more about that when the time is right. No, I've never been to the La Monte Young installation. You did, I'm taking it? If so, how was it? Like I said, still no post-novel news from my agent, and I'm an anxious and unhappy, uh, camper. ** _Black_Acrylic, Safe trip to Leeds today, my friend, and I'm very glad to hear the new med is making a clear difference. ** Steevee, That is some internet weirdness you've got going on there. Oh, no, my dislike of reggae has no impact on dub, which I think is a very interesting form. Lee Perry is incredible, of course, and King Tubby, etc. Yeah, it's the lack of much imagination and the dogmatism and samey guitar-bass-drum sound of reggae that bores me. Dub is nothing if not an experimental form, and I love that about it. ** Chris Cochrane, Hey, man. Yeah, the space sounds ... curious. I saw Ish's email about it this morning too. I mean, it sounds doable. Ish said you and I are going to switch places? Wasn't quite sure what he meant by that, but I guess I'll know soon enough. ** Creative Massacre, Hi. Thanks for the 'Black Swan' report. My defenses are lowering. Oh, that is cool about your photo/ article ending up in the local online newspaper. And especially about Billy Hume digging your videos. Yeah, the power and reach of those social networking sites is pretty strange and sometimes quite advantageous, for sure. ** Andrew, Congrats on the new computer. If it works, what else matters. And nice use of the Chat Roulette phenom/ option. Any response? ** Inthemostpeculiarway, Hey! Good to see you, man! Let's see ... oh, Kiddiepunk and Oscar just went away for Xmas holidays. They'll be back. It's my friends Scott Treleaven and Paul P who left forever. But, yeah, I'll see them again, definitely. You did watch an insane amount of movies. Okay, I guess I'll see 'Black Swan', and I'll just hope that I get swayed 'cos with almost every other movie by that guy I walk away muttering about what a load of bullshit it was. 'Temple Grandin, oh, right. I don't that ever made it over here. I like 'LDW' and 'Toy Story 3' too, as you know. So, not a bad movie fest, all in all. I'm glad that shower washed the spookiness out of your face and hair. I don't even look in a mirror in the morning until I've had a huge cup of coffee. Coffee is my shower, I guess. Let's see ... wow, I guess I'll just give you the highlights of the last few days. They were pretty quiet in any case because, as I said up above, every single one of my friends is out of town. The Buche # 1 event was fun. Actually, you'll see a bunch of photos of that tomorrow, so I'll wait and let them tell the tale. We had power and internet outages two days in a row at the Recollets for lengthy periods. That was interesting but annoying because I'm out of practice regarding an internet-free life. So, I was kind of at a loss. I cleaned and wandered and read and wrote a bit and went out to buy food and cigarettes. I was so hoping that my agent would write or call on Monday as promised to tell me he'd read the novel and loved it. Well, he didn't promise to love it. But instead I got a text saying he'd been too busy to finish reading it, and so I'm still sitting here playing the waiting game, which is a drag. It's just psychological stuff, but I feel like the novel won't be finished until he has okayed it and sent to my publisher where I will then be waiting anxiously for my editor's response. But at least I'll have half of the battle done. Anyway, I'm just stressing and whining, sorry. Yeah, so it was kind of an uneventful few days, I guess, because I can't think of anything else that's interesting. Today Yury and I are picking up Buche #2 for Xmas day eating, and I might go see 'Tron' tonight, although the shows will probably be sold out. Okay, good to have you back, and give me your Wednesday without further ado please. ** Bill, Oh, no, you're in LA now during the Biblical deluge. What bad timing. Are you going to try to get out and see stuff anyway, slick roads or not? I don't think I've seen that Nitsch footage, hm, but you can bet I'm going to find it today. ** Nerstes, Hey, excellent to see you! Oh, man, you make total sense when you talk about wanting to help people who don't want to be helped. Assuming you're the want-to-be helper in that equation, I've been in your situation so many times in my life, from childhood until not too many years ago. I think the need to help is very complicated, and while some selfishness is clearly involved, and some need to prove yourself, make yourself powerful, etc., I personally think it comes out of a sense of concern and caring that's real and very deep. The problem is that it gets distorted so easily because the dynamic between the helper and the helpee or whatever can be very poisonous. I feel for you, if you're going through that, and I don't know what the solution is. I struggle with that dynamic myself a lot. Merry Xmas to you, Lou, and lots of love to you. ** We seem to have made it through the p.s. without an internet outage and before I was exiled today, so it's a lucky day. Or something. Gather around Michael Karo's magic show, please, and I'll see you tomorrow.
