p.s. Hey. Obviously, I'm hoping to hear back re: your favorite stuff of 2010, if you don't mind. Thanks! ** Abigail Winthrope (Mrs), A gentleman, well, I'm not often referred to along that line, so thank you in return. ** David Ehrenstein, A funky Xmas indeed. Very nice. Everyone, Xmas won't or shouldn't retreat into memory before you experience David Ehrenstein's 'Have Yourself a Funky Little Xmas' over on FaBlog, so please do so. ** Jheorgge, Thanks for the holiday wishes, and I send some retroactive wishes to you. Paris was/is freezing cold, so my walk was a shorty, but it took. What's up and new with you? ** Empty Frame, Greetings. Well, last I heard, the novel will come out in the States next fall, but I don't think that's set in stone. My publisher there hasn't accepted it officially yet, and I think my editor is reading it now. In the UK, well, first the publisher has to like the novel and want to publish it, and I'll let you know if they do. Mm, I should probably keep the UK publisher's identity under wraps until the deal is either done or undone, but I'll pass along the word when I have one. The character wanting to be flat thing originated in the Guro community. There's a strata of Guro aficionados who have flatness as a fantasy/ fetish and call themselves 'squish junkies', and my character is extremely into mangas and anime, so it comes from there, although I elaborated it into something a bit wilder in my novel. No EM Forster referencing at all though. All of the novel's influences and referrals are French. Poor Forster, though. Pretty interesting about that Cheshire Cat guy. I need to read Ed White's memoir. I ordered 'The Gas', and it has the psychedelic cover, yeah. I actually looked into doing a post about the novel, but there aren't any excerpts from it anywhere on line, strangely, so that scotched that plan. Hope you're feeling a whole ton better today, man. ** Kiddiepunk, Mr.! Excellent Xmas, I'm assuming? Very quiet one here. Buche (yum!) and a little TV and nothing much. You zip through CDG tomorrow, no? The coast seems like it's going to be clear on the weather front, last I checked. ** Killer Luka, Thank you for the Xmas gift. Best Xmas gift I got. Well, it was the only Xmas gift I got, to be honest, but it would have been the best in any case. I assume you survived the holiday pleasantly? ** L@rstonovich, Yeah, sorry for the GbV hardball tactic. I did it because I care, man. ** Sypha, Thanks again so much for the weekend! Oh, I like when people shoplift my books. I don't even mind being deprived of the 3 1/2 cents I would have made from the sale if I was lucky. Everyone, Sypha found one more Thomas Ligotti interview, if you remain unsated. It's on a site called Macabre Cadaver, and you will find it here. ** Steevee, You really made me want Chinese food. Paris is weirdly lacking in Chinese restaurants, compared to cities in the States anyway. It's strange. Anyway, I think I'll find one. Interesting news on the Abel Ferrara front. He's liked here. I'll check for the new stuff. ** Thomas Moronic, Hey, T. Oh, I forgot to add you on Skype. I will in a moment. Nice about the new poems. I'm in a poem writing mood, but they aren't coming. Cool, list! Everyone, the awesome Thomas Moronic has posted his 'art highlights from 2010' -- art in the general sense -- list over at Transductions, and go check it out, for sure. I forgot the Xiu Xiu album re: my list. Weird. It would have been there. Really nice to see Oscar Tuazon on there. You know he's a friend of mine, right? Terrific artist. When you come over, we should go to the gallery he co-runs in Belleville, and you can meet him, if you haven't. ** Chris Cochrane, Belated Xmas joy and all of that! Oh, blizzard, yum, sigh. Of course, it'll be a mushy hell afterwards, but still. I'm going to see you so soon. Weirdly soon. Good weirdly. Please let it not blizzard on my flight day. ** Jeff, Hey, Jeff. It was quiet around here on the antinatalism front. I kind of figured it would be. Everyone, d.l. Jeff found yet another new interview with Thomas Ligotti. Oh, wait, it's the same interview that Sypha posted, so never mind. Just know that Jeff recommends you click that earlier link. Oh, and he ... well, I'll let him tell you: 'My favorite author from the 'Ligotti-o-sphere,' or whatever it could be called, is Quentin S. Crisp. My assessment is based purely on his blog, as I haven't read his stories yet, although I have a few of his collections. Soon is as good a time as any to read them. I like this interview with Crisp by Matt Cardin: QSC. He touches on subjects like Buddhism and antinatalism with more care and appreciation for other perspectives than I can usually muster. He also runs a new press called Chômu that looks very promising.' I've been wanting to read Quentin S. Crisp. I'll investigate those links. Thanks a lot, Jeff! ** Andrew, Well, yeah, the only biscuits (of the type of which we are speaking) in Paris are at KFC, I think. I'm an easy lay when it comes to biscuits. Waffle House biscuits, the kind you buy pre-made and pre-cut in those tubes, it's all good. I might buy 'Epic Mickey' today. I really think I might. ** Misanthrope, Welcome back, Merry Xmas in reverse, etc.! Wow, you really got in the Xmas spirit there. That's nice. I like that. I can't tell if I was in the spirit or not. I don't think so especially. Oh, maybe a little. ** Bill, Hey. Are you back home in SF now? Oh, Daniel Martinez. I know him. Interesting guy. I haven't seen his work in a long time. Those pieces look really good. Hm, I hope I can catch that show. And of course the MoJT is sublime, and, with the addition, even more so, yeah. Good trip then, all in all? ** Math, Hey, M. Heavy (in the good sense) love right back at you. Well, you made much better use of your lonely, decorations-free Xmas than I made of my emptied one, not that the Buche wasn't delish and everything. I even forgot to buy champagne, and Paris is post-apocalyptic on Xmas Day. The weirdest thing is that all the stores and everything here close early on Xmas Eve, like at 5 pm, even the big shopping center places. That caught me off guard. ** David, Well, your happy holidays wish was early compared to mine: Happy holidays! There is still New Years to go, I guess, and I guess it's a holiday, so our wishes are right on time, when you think about it. ** Bernard Welt, I bet you ate some really fucking delicious on Saturday, didn't you? You probably made it too! I put extra cheese on my veggie dog sandwiches. ** Sweettomb, Trinie! Hey, pal! You're living in Los Feliz! Score. And walking distance from Joel's and my pad, wow. What's the photo of you and Amy for? That's cool. I'm good. I finished my long-in-progress novel a couple of weeks ago, so that feels good, and if my publisher likes it, I'll feel even better. I miss you! Matt too! I can't wait to see you guys! I hope everything goes really well in Vermont, and, yeah, great news from you all the way around! ** Lord_s, Dude! What a rare and great pleasure it is to see you, man! Awesome about the first 30,000 words. What's the hang up, do you think? Get on finishing that. Orders from cyberspace. Think of its future fans. Nice about the new girlfriend. Girlfriends are good things, no question. What have you liked especially this year, in music or whatever? I'd love to know before lurkdom sets back in. ** Tomkendall, Time machine-enhanced Merry Xmas to you, man! ** Pisycaca, Hi, Montse! Yeah, I feel relieved for sure, but I look forward to hopefully get the green light from my publisher. Then my shoulders will fully de-knot. No, they ended up delaying the 'Tron' release in France until fucking February. I don't know why. So, I didn't see it, and nothing else playing here was all that tempting. My Xmas was quiet too. Like, really, really quiet, which was fine. You guys going to get to London, do you think? ** Alan, Merry Xmas two days late, man! ** Alex, Hey, welcome, and thanks a lot. Nice to meet you. Well, only lurk if you really want to. You hanging out here would more than A-okay with me. I just clicked over and saw you have some of your stories online and readable. I'll check them out properly when I get done here. Take care. ** Colin, Hey. My Xmas was nothing much, which was really fine. Yeah, I'm basically just looking for 3D kicks and a few cheap thrills from 'Tron', so it should be okay. ** _Black_Acrylic, Hey, Ben! Oh, wow, a possible new apartment so soon? Hope you find something. Give a shout with the news, of course. ** Statictick, I appreciate your hello. I'll see your hello, and I raise you three hellos. ** Chilly Jay Chill, Hi, Jeff! Oh, heck, I forgot about those new Bernhard books. One or both would have been in my favorites list today. Oh, well, there you go. I didn't know about the Peck review until I saw your mention. I just read it quickly. Hm, yeah, reductive is the word, I agree. Dale likes his broad statements, always has. It's nice of him to reference me thusly, I think, ha ha, although that 'lived too long' thing is a little weird since Bernhard was older than I am when he died. I think those two books are a whole lot better than he does. That's for sure. Anyway, thanks for letting me know about that, man. ** Pilgarlic, Hey. Ha ha, awesome Xmas travel story, man. I was just putting together a blog post about Terry Southern, and I was looking at his stuff, early Tom Wolfe, McGuane, and so on, and I thought, I wonder if Pilgarlic likes that psychedelic 60s/70s era fiction 'cos I was reminded of the wonderful way you write. Anyway, you were a joy, as always. ** Creative Massacre, Bad Xmas, huh? Sorry, pal. It's over, though. New Years shouldn't be so rough, right? ** Inthemostpeculiarway, Hey. First, oh man, I'm so sorry to hear that you have to move in with your parents. You sound pretty okay or resigned with that, but, yeah, I'm sorry. Will you have decent privacy and stuff at your parents' place? You get along with them okay, don't you? Lady Gaga just toured in France, so she's everywhere here right now as a consequence. I guess she got naked onstage at her Paris concerts, and that certainly didn't help keep out of the news and etc. Wow, your grandma sounds very complicated. I mean, Jesus, re: that iPhone. Your poor grandfather. Yeah, that's a sad image. I'm on your niece's side in the niece vs. grandma battle, at this point anyway, ha ha. I agree with you about 'Inception'. My weekend: Quiet, so there won't be much of interest. Hm. Well, my planned walking trip into Xmas Paris got curtailed because it was just too cold to be outside that long. It was -4 degrees on Xmas Eve. So, I just walked around in my neighborhood for a little while until my feet were frozen, and I bought some cigarettes and supplies for the weekend since everything here was pretty much closed until this morning. On Xmas, as I vaguely mentioned higher up, Yury and I were going to go see 'Tron' until I found out it was delayed until February. Weird. I was wondering why all the posters everywhere for it disappeared about a week and a half ago, and now I know why. And there were no other movies that he and I both wanted to see, so we ended up doing nothing much. We did eat the car buche. It was extremely delicious. I took photos. I don't think they add up to a decent post, but I'll put them up here at some point in some context. There was a documentary on TV about Paris between the years 1905 - 1930, and that was cool. I love seeing old movies of Paris. It looks a lot like it does nowadays except for the cars and the fact that men don't wear hats and have mustaches anymore. Or not all of them. Every man had a hat and a mustache back then. I talked to my pal Joel via Skype, and I talked to my sister and my nephew. I hadn't talked to my nephew since he went away to university, weirdly, so that was cool, He's studying philosophy and French, and he's working on a new novel, and I think I talked him into to coming over to visit me in the spring or summer. So, yeah, Xmas was not too much. I got no Xmas presents. I got two Xmas cards, and that was it. Yesterday was very quiet too due to everything being closed, it being freezing cold, and none of my friends being in town. I worked on the text for the new piece with Gisele a bit. I realized I have over 200 pages of stuff I cut from my novel, and I entertained the idea that if people get into the novel, I might put together a little book of its missing pieces because they kind of further explain and reveal the novel's complicated mystery. But first we'll see if people like the novel enough to bother doing that. This woman named Kate Wolf is staying at the Recollets at the moment, and she writes on art for the website ArtSlant, and she asked if we could meet up so she could interview me, so we did meet at a cafe, and it was nice, talking a lot about LA -- she lives there -- and other stuff. That was the high point of yesterday, I think. I ate some more of the car. My editor wrote to say he would start reading my novel today, so that's cool and ... gulp. Yury downloaded the new Duran Duran album for some reason, and then he played it about four times in a row, and I have never had any use whatsoever for Duran Duran, but, if you do, I can tell you that it sounds like it could have been recorded in 1984, I swear, so if you like them, I think you might like it. Last night, I just did some blog post work and watched something on TV ... hm, I can't remember what. And blah blah. Pretty crappy Xmas report there, I'm sorry. Please brighten my life with a report on your Monday, please? ** Okay, the year continues now. Please let everyone else around here and me know your favorite books or music or movies or whatever else from the months past, if you feel like it, and I'll see you tomorrow, naturally.
