p.s. RIP: Don Van Vliet. That's a major loss if there ever was one. He was such a visionary, significant, singular musical artist. Hard to even know what to say. ** Bernard Welt, Interesting. ** Jeff, Yeah, re: Rare. That's what you get when you make money your priority. Maybe if you get yourself accustomed to keeping to yourself and not drinking for a while, you'll find a new way to be social and enjoy it. It's definitely not impossible if the idea is allowed to feel possible. ** Pilgarlic, Well, enjoy the island, man, and survive the traveling. I'll try to get that car/ Buche pic for you if I can. I think the car might be a bit big for a human mouth, but we'll see. Really interesting stuff about Zoroastrianism. Thanks a lot for that. ** Steevee, Oh, Iranian? The article didn't mention that. Hunh. ** David Ehrenstein, Top of the morning to you. ** Jake, Hi, Jake. Yeah, I finished my novel at long last. I'm kind of trying to adjust to not having it to work on. It's kind of an odd feeling. Oh, right, it's summer there. Really nice about the guy you're seeing. Sorry about the necessary intrigue with his parents. Maybe there's something romantic and sleuth-like about it? Picnics are great. I still get all fannish and awestruck when I see really cool picnic baskets on sale places. I used to want one really badly. Anyway, enjoy the heck of that. Out of everything. ** MANCY, Hey, man. Thanks about the post/work. Do you get any semi-decent (at least) time off from work for Xmas? I have this feeling the answer is no, right? ** Killer Luka, Hm. I don't know, that 'Raw' trailer makes it look pretty lame and silly. And it looks MP shaved his ass with a nail file. I won't be hunting for it, but if I see it, I'll let you know. It seems to have been made by Sagger Skaterz, and I know the guy who runs that porn company. Maybe I can get some MP gossip the next time I talk to him. ** Davey, Hey, man! How good to see you! How are you doing? What's going on? Thanks a lot for the Slate link. Even though my novel's finished, the cannibalism topic isn't, so that's useful. Yeah, take care, and share what's up with you these days, if you have a minute. ** Steven Trull, Hey, Steven. So, if you had to be one of those Santa Clauses up there, which one would you be? And which one would have sex with, if you had to? And if you had to be stranded on a desert island with one of them, which one? My problem is that I want to do stuff, but it's too cold to do the stuff I want to do. 'Tron' at the Castro? Must be the de-aged Jeff Bridges? ** Allesfliesst, Hey, K. That openness will serve you well. What it will serve you, I don't know. But the serving part will go well. I predict. Oh, Harper P has the novel under contract. Basically, that means they want it in theory, and they get first dibs, and they've made a particular monetary offer, but, you bet, if they don't like it, they can say no. They're not locked in. I think it'll be okay, though. This one is different, style-wise, so that's the only real stickler. But I don't think they're anticipating a breakthrough, crazily well selling novel from me, and this one is not that, unless I'm crazy. ** Jon Reiss, Hey. I thought the Brooklyn Based thing was interesting. Is interesting. And Jewcy is quite curious. I don't know I hadn't found it before. I didn't know about the Nash interview when I looked yesterday, but I'll look again. Interesting guy, Nash. I really like talking to him. It's nice of him to reference here. The Paper Chase, okay, I'll hunt for them today. KRS is a real plus. Named after the movie, I guess. I saw that movie a million years ago. About university life or something. Curious. Anyway, I'll let you know what I think. Thanks a lot, man. ** Heliotrope, Hi, Mark. Yeah, I saw the LA rain 'cos I ... what do you call it? Face ... something. An iPhone cam-like phone call option. Anyway, I did that with Joel last night, and he showed me the rain. Man, I miss LA. But being stuck here, I don't have to buy Xmas presents, just ridiculously expensive designer cakes. Use your Skype, man. Use it on me. I'm all lonely and freezing my ass off over here. Miss you too, bud. And J. too. ** _Black_Acrylic, Oh, I know. Beefheart, Jesus, it doesn't get more genius than that. Really sad. Oh, no, the pipes froze again?! I'm sorry to hear that, Ben. Your landlord is going to have to pony up and stop with the bandaid approach. That's all there is to it. ** Chris Cochrane. Oh, yeah, let me know what's up once you've seen Abrons. I should have my NYC plans set in stone one way or another today or by tomorrow at the latest. Great weekend to you too, Chris. ** The Dreadful Flying Glove, Great words about Beefheart. Man, he was just ... amazing. I feel so lucky to have gotten to see him/them live a lot, from the 'Trout Mask' era right up through 'Ice Cream for Crow'. There was a rumor about three years ago that Rare was going back to Nintendo, but it didn't happen obviously. ** Craig, Hey. Get some sleep somehow, man. I talked to Kiddiepunk, and he said he would give you the scoop about getting his books in the comments section, so watch for that. Yeah, the buche was fancy. You'll see the hard evidence next week. 'Scott Pilgrim' still hasn't played in France yet, but I'm really looking forward to it. Unwinding is tough. For me too. Playing favorite music loud and bopping around to it really helps me. ** Creative Massacre, Glad you got sleep. Me too. Hopefully, the insomnia virus is cured to death or it got passed on to some stranger you or I passed on the sidewalk or something. Good weekend to you, pal. ** Bill, Yeah, I know, Van Vliet, fuck and ugh. Oh, I've been to Vrolik a bunch of times. It was a fave destination when I lived in Holland. Amazing place, and I'll check out that book. Yeah, you'd like the Vrolik for sure. I'd like to get to Amsterdam, but not until it's significantly warmer. Winter in Amsterdam is no fun. ** Math, Hey. Hope you like 'EtV'. Good weekend to you, and, oh, I'll be in touch re: the email. Thank you! ** Michael Karo, Yeah, Beefheart, such bad news. Yeah, I think I'd read that he lived up semi-near you. I'd thought he was living in the desert all these years. ** Andrew, I definitely do not recommend breaking both of your wrists at the same time. It has all kinds of drawbacks. ** Misanthrope, Hey. Leo is going to have to start moving his facial expression more than a fraction in two or three directions before he makes much impact is films again, I think. He's like Mr. Glower these days. I don't know shit, obviously, but I would bet that getting your blood pressure normalized, losing a little weight, and getting more exercise might just take care of most if not all of that lethargy. Seems kind of logical. What's going on with you this weekend? Aren't you off to NYC any second now? ** Alan, Hey, A. Yeah, in the past, I've pretty much always given my newly finished novels to my friend the poet Amy Gerstler to read first. I wait for her response before I send mss. to my agent. In this case, I had this deadline, and Amy usually takes a few weeks to read my novels, and she and I are a bit out of touch email-wise at the moment, so I didn't get that opportunity. But I think it'll be okay. It's definitely good that my agent likes the first half so much, but the novel becomes increasingly committed to, well, itself, I guess -- it would be hard to explain briefly -- as it goes along, so it's kind of important that he reads the whole thing because a lot of things are turned inside out in the latter half. I think he'll be fine with it, but I don't want to take things for granted, I guess. Thanks for asking, man. ** All right, you guys have Santas galore this weekend. Hope they pass your time. See you on Monday.
