Short fiction collections aren't frowned upon, I don't think, but they're seen as less salable. I think that at some of the better, more literary publishers, it's possible there could still be editors and higher ups who are into supporting and building 'careers' for writers long term, in which case publishing a short story collection first would be attractive. The writer and d.l. Justin Taylor had an initial short fiction collection published earlier this year, and it was a pretty big success, so there are exceptions. As far as how I got published initially, well, long story very short, it happened gradually, and I had a lot of really good luck. I self-published my first two books (poetry) and then some very small presses got wind and became interested, and I published a few books with them which led to more established small presses becoming interested and publishing books by me. So, essentially, my work gained a readership and following that way, and I think that build up helped a lot with the larger presses because there was already an audience and a buzz of sorts around my work, which made taking me on seem like slightly less of a gamble. I didn't have an agent when I submitted 'Closer', but a friend of mine in publishing sent it around to different publishers on my behalf, and it was rejected everywhere. I was really lucky to have a fan working at Grove Press who urged me to submit it there, and he helped the book get accepted by supporting it from the inside. After 'Closer', I got an agent who has continued to be my agent until now. So, my situation is an unusual one, but I do think that starting off with small presses and working your way up is a good way to go, if you're patient. Blake Butler and Shane Jones are two recent examples of writers who built reputations in the indie presses first and became attractive to major publishers in that way. It's quite hard to get published by a major press without either an agent or publishing contacts or people in the know greasing the wheels for you, as it were, but it does happen. Ideally, get an agent first. That's the easiest way to go. Anyway, that's my experience, and I'm speaking about the situation in the US. I don't really know how it works in the UK.
