Exclusive Designer Interviews: Fleur't

Eve's Apples presents a new series of designer interviews. To kick off our exciting interviews with some of your favorite lingerie designers, we're bringing you Nancy Yoo, Owner and Designer of Fleur't, who abides by the simple belief of making "flirty, feminine lingerie that fits and feels good."

Fleur't, known for comfortable, lacy lingerie, shows its top selling bralettes & panties, above.

Fleur't is one of my favorite brands for the simple fact that once I put on the lingerie, it's so soft and supple that I never want to take it off. In coquettish lace and flirty details, wearing Fleur't lingerie makes me feel utterly divine. Read my interview below with Nancy about her philosophies and inspiration behind Fleur't.

Eve: What was your inspiration to become a designer?

Nancy: I was in graduate school studying for my Ph.D. in literature and though I was in an intellectually stimulating environment and surrounded by amazing people, I felt like I needed more a creative outlet. At that time I had a friend who as a graphics designer who felt the same way. We decided to start a lingerie company together. That didn't last long but I was hooked.

Eve: Who or what is your greatest design influence?

Nancy: I am into the beauty of clean lines and organized but also dreamy and magical spaces, intellectually, spiritually and emotionally. So I get my "feelings" about my designs and designing in general from looking at photographs, art, and especially natural forms that appeal to that sense in me. I also get a lot from stories.

Eve: If your designs made one statement what would they be?

Nancy: Life is dreamy and magical.

Eve: What was your biggest obstacle in starting your business?

Nancy: Lack of financial and business knowledge.

Eve: What is your greatest reward/joy in designing or your business?

Nancy: Feeling like I can express some sense of myself and the world in my designs and also that I can bring beauty and specialness into other people's lives.

Eve: Who is your favorite designer?

Nancy: I like beautiful, functional but feminine clothes. Chloe, Vanessa Bruno, Catherine Malandrino, Thakoon, Philip Lim all appeal to me.

Eve: What is your favorite quote that you live by?

Nancy: I don't have one. But I do like to remind myself every day that my life is fun, effortless and full of creative joy. When things get really tough which they do all the time) or when I have to do things with my business that I don't like (read: sales and bills), actively thinking this and actually speaking it helps me feel more connected to myself, my life and my business.

Eve: What is your favorite piece that you designed? Why?

Nancy: It's funny because my favorite designs are usually the ones that haven't sold well! I love wearing a ruched back bikini that we made out of beautiful stretch burnout stripe from Austria. It's just sexy and fun. Also, there is a lace bralet that we stopped selling two years ago made out of a chantilly stretch lace with lace straps that feels so romantic. I just re-discovered and can't stop wearing it.

Eve: What is the most important piece of advice when trying on/wearing lingerie/bras/swimwear?

Nancy: Make sure that whatever you're wearing fits you well and makes you feel beautiful and special without constricting the physical and energetic flow in your body. This means getting connected to your physical and spiritual self, not always easy but well worth the effort.

Eve: What is the one piece of lingerie/swimwear that you can’t live without?

Nancy: Sexy panties.

Thank you Nancy for the interview!

Lingerie Designer Feature: Part 1 ~ Eberjey

Can you say, "J'adore Eberjey?" If you've tried their feminine bralettes and cozy lingerie then you've probably said it countless times before. For those of you who haven't had the pleasure, try one of their bralettes and you'll know what I mean.

It's the opposite of when you accidently fall asleep in a bra. Hello -- uncomfortable! An underwire inevitably sticks into a rib and the cups yank up over the chest. When I accidently feel asleep in my Eberjey Retro India Lace Bralette, I feel fell deliriously fell asleep t
hinking I wasn't wearing a bra. I proceeded to sleep better than a Princess on a stack of down mattresses! In a sea of cheaply made lingerie that pokes, prods and pulls, how it is that Eberjey has become known for it's lovely lace and delicate details on comfy lingerie?
It starts with an amazing mission dedicated to comfort, life and love. Owners, Alejandrina Mejia and Mariela Rovito, state that, "Ebjerjey was born from our belief that the layer worn closest to the heart should express happiness, love and confidence -- all the things that make a woman truly beautiful.

Our dream was to make a line of underthings that we would wear ourselves. Tired of lingerie that confines women to an unnatural idea of standard beauty, we wanted drawers of pretty things that flatter real bodies and feel good too. So we came up with a small collection
of carefully designed items, in delicately flirty patterns and joyful colors. Things that made us happy when we put them on every morning.

Turns out, our 'dream' lingerie made other women happy, too! And so we began our production and named our baby Eberjey (ebb-er-zhay) which
means 'joy' in a Nigerian dialect."

With all focus on a pleasurable experience for the Eberjey Lingerista, it's no wonder that they instantly become a best seller where they're sold. As someone who has worked with them personally, I know that the customer is of paramount importance. They genuinely care of the customer's experience. When Eve's Apples was mentioned in The New York Times article, "The A-Crowd," Eberjey was the first line to sell out in our store and Mar
iela personally made sure we were restocked immediately -- that says a lot about their integrity.

Now that's quite a company and quite a vision that makes quite delicious bras.

The Quotable Lingerista: Dita von Tesse

Dita von Tesse, one of Eve's favorite lingerie icons, is not only an entertainer but also a designer and business woman. To find out more about this fascinating woman and her thoughts, read a few of her quotes below.

"Please, oh please, let me never become the woman in the room that hates the younger women in the room."

"I'm always on time when it matters....!"

“People always think I just hang around in jeans or a tracksuit, and I’m like, Well, no. I’m sitting here right now, having just rolled out of bed, wearing a vintage slip. I don’t have any makeup on, my hair is probably a disaster, but that doesn’t mean I’ll put on jeans and a T-shirt because no one’s looking. I mean, I don’t put on a full face of makeup, heels and a little black dress every time I walk out the door—I’m not an alien from another planet who doesn’t like to be comfortable—it’s just that, for me, the natural version of me, is only for people who are close to me. I don’t know why everyone wants me to wear jeans so badly.”

(The above quote from Fashionindie in Fashion Quotable: Dita von Tesse)
