p.s. Hey. Today the unimpeachable Evil Ghost of JW Veldhoen helps us start to wind down and ratchet up the blog's Halloween festivities via our ears and eyes, and please get spooky with him, and thank you, sir, and thanks to all of you who click. I'm feeling fairly better today, and, yeah, I think that's it. ** David Ehrenstein, Good morning, sir. ** David, Hey. ** Bernard Welt, Wow, either Donald made his cactus fears known to me or I remember you telling me that story. It's cool about the no post thing, of course. Still sorry I'm going to miss you here. Due to popular demand, we might end up doing 'Them' again in January, so maybe then, if it happens. Get thee behind Bernard, swamp! ** Wolf, Hey, Wolf! Cool. Uh, cold's getting better, thank you. I haven't read that story yet, but it seems, uh, tasty. I will in a bit. Everyone, d.l. and maestro of the universe Wolf shares a Halloween story with us all, and I dare you to resist once I tell you that its title/ headline is 'Russian bears treat graveyards as 'giant refrigerator''. Oh, Swans, how was the show? Just, uh, yesterday, I think, I was talking to someone who saw them here recently and ended up all covers with chills in the great way, not in the sickness-related way. ** Jose, Awesome, thanks for the link. That movie stars one of the peripheral characters in my novel. Must see. Everyone, d.l. Jose mentioned the film director Andrzej Zulawksi the other day, and here's a chance give his work a peek in the form of a clip from the 1981 film 'Possession', if you're interested. ** Laurabeth, Hi, Laura. No, I don't know that show at all. I'm really kind of five years behind on American TV at this point. I hope it/he was great last night. Ian's blog post about games was really awesome and beyond the call of duty. Tell him thanks a lot from me. Tell I'm very happy that he's a fellow Nintendo guy, and that next time I get to see him, I want to talk games. Very cool. ** Steevee, Well, like you said, it was a long shot. I mean, you should probably look around for other actors, no? Try not to feel self-defeating about your next film. The film world really does seem like the hardest context to negotiate of all the art forms' surrounding limbos. I don't want to hit you with platitudes, but, like they say, not doing is never knowing. Kent Jones and Claire Denis, very nice. ** JoeM, Uh, ... so you want your prize to be my humiliation? Okay, if you're going to be like that, then since you said 'dress up as MJ', which I can interpret as anyone whose name can be reduced to the initials MJ, I'll see what I can do. ** Colin, Howdy, Colin. ** _Black_Acrylic, Hi, Ben. Cold's on the wane, thanks. Gossamer's not too bad, but paradigm, wow, that's tough. Use it ironically maybe? Enjoy your days off, man. ** Andrew, Hey. Oh, I made liondom up. It's, like, a combination of 'literary lion' and kingdom. Shorthand for, uh, you're in like Flynn. Congrats on winning the sweater. Good colleges for what kind of study? Writing, fashion, ... or what? What one intends to study makes all the difference re: quality. ** L@rstonovich, Hey. Ha ha, by the time I got out the post-performance stuff and cranked up my iPhone on my walk home, I literally got about 4 1/2 minutes of your show before my phone lost its signal and turned into a metal lump. So, I'm counting on the archive, needless to say. ** The Evil Ghost of JW Veldhoen, Hey. Thanks a zillion for today. I hope you don't mind that I crowned it with that photo. I liked its resonance and I hoped you would. Newspaper, art direction ... that's not bad at all, man, as jobs go. My cold is being absorbed into the rest of me, I guess. That's what it feels like. It's more like a tone now than a sickness. ** Sypha, Hey, James. ** Alan, Thank you again for yesterday. The Cahun/you combo was a much deserved hit. Yep, it's a blurb anytime you like. Oh, the dreaded PS122 pillars. Sorry about that. I should have told you to come early enough to get a good seat. It didn't seem like it was going to be full house until just before the show. But thanks a lot for giving it a shot, man. ** Nb, Hey. I know a little of Olafur Arnalds, but not the new one, and I like what I already know a lot. I'll get that. Cool. Oh fuck, I hope I didn't transfer my cold to you. My version was not too debilitating though, if I did. I'm okayish already. I'm on the HH thing. I should have some word/plan today, I hope, 'cos, yeah, time is running out, shit. ** Robert-nyc, Hi, Robert. I'm doing better, thank you. Maybe if I'm really lucky, I'll run into you at the Steampunk House on Friday, although I'll have to go late, if I do. Well, you will take pix of you as Little Edie, right? I say go zombie on top of that, def. Nice mental image, that one. ** Misanthrope, Weirdly, I have never noticed your little teeth. Do you hide them? It's clear skies outside today so far, but yesterday absolutely sucked. Rain and high humidity. Clothes getting drenched from both directions. ** Statictick, Hey, Nickster. Glad you liked the Neckface stuff, natch. I aim for 'Likes'. GbV, sigh, well, sing along for me, okay? Sigh. Now I want to see what this arm contraption looks like. Can I? ** Inthemostpeculiarway, Hey! No, I am kind of much better, healthwise, surprisingly. My top five Disney movies? You mean animated ones and excluding Pixar, I'm guessing? Hm, well, in addition to 'Pinocchio', ... 'Dumbo', 'Peter Pan', 'Snow White', '101 Dalmations'. Off the top of my head. What are yours? I hate sweet potatoes, but sweet potato fries might be an exception. Hm. Are yams and sweet potatoes the same thing? I really hate yams. My day: Well, on the day you weren't here, I think I just worked, felt shitty then went out with Nb to see Tao Lin do a reading at St. Marks Bookshop, and he was great, and then we had Mexican food, and then I slept. It ended up being a nice day all in all. Yesterday, I worked on my novel, and then I ... I can't remember. Oh, the New York Times was coming to 'Them' last night in order to review it, and they wanted their photographer to shoot photos, so we had to show up at PS122 really early and do a fake version of the show so the photographer could get her pictures. Then we all sat around and talked and ate and stuff waiting for show time. I guess 'Them' is such a big hit that there's all this talk now of touring it in the US and maybe Europe. We might do it in NYC again in January. I'm not sure. Anyway, it's crazy and awesome how much people seem to really love the piece and are so enthusiastic about it. It's really unexpected. I mean, I do think it's a powerful and very good piece, but that feeling doesn't always translate to the audience, and it seems to have in this case. Anyway, blah blah, we did the show, and it went very well and got a great response. Some people I knew were there, and I talked to them afterwards: Eli Leven aka Disco 3-way, Lonely Christopher, Jim Fouratt who ran the legendary club Danceteria and was/is a major Queer activist, Omar Berrada who's a French writer I know who happened to be in NYC, and a bunch of others. Then I eventually walked home in the horrible rain/humidity weather that we had here yesterday. The reviewer from the NYT wanted a copy of the text, so I sent it to them c/o PS122, and I'm hoping that's a good sign re: the review. Anyway, then I just ate and wound diwn and went to sleep. It's Thursday. How did yours go? ** Bill, Hi, B. Oh, how great that Kazuo Ohno film series looks. That should be amazing. I think I'm seeing the Thek show today, if everything falls into place. ** Bollo, Hey. Will the group show have an online presence, I hope? Yeah, I've got some feelers out for the Tape Label Day. Could be quite cool. If you have any label suggestions, I would love to know them. I don't want to miss out on any really good or interesting labels. Sweet on that guitar pedal clone thing. Harmonic Percolator: what a nice name. Good day, J. ** Allesfliesst, Yeah, makes sense what you say about hypnagogic vs. shoegazer. For me, I think the most interesting difference has to do with the belief factor. Shoegaze was a component of a very optimistic and romantic time: the early 90s, the positivist philosophical bent of Rave, which was a pretty concurrent movement/genre. I think bands like MBV, Ride, Lush, etc. were carving out a future, and the hypnagogic bands, to generalize, are resurrecting and mutating something but without all the belief and ambition. I'm not sure their interest in overwhelming people is as committed or something. Which makes their music interesting too, of course. I get what you mean about narrative in music, yeah, but I've never really favorited narrative in anything, I guess. The struggle against narrative is very interesting and noble and often quite pleasurable to me maybe. I don't know. Very good thing to think about. Oh, echo in my novels ... too lengthy to go into in this situation. For instance, I originally wanted my novel 'Period', which consists (to my mind) of a sequence of intersected sculptural pieces of text, to work or interface or whatever via an echoing effect, but I couldn't get it to work, so I ended up working with resemblance and reflections instead. Might make no sense. Thanks, K. ** Tomkendall, Hey, Tom! Superb to see you, man. Thanks a lot about my dad. I'm ok. How about you? What's new in life and in writing? ** Oscar B, Dude! Biebster! Things are good, yeah, but I am looking forward to being back in our mutual home front for sure. Are you guys doing something for Halloween? Did you sort that out? ** The Dreadful Flying Glove, Hey. Cool. Wolf saw them last night. Pray tell in the aftermath, my man. ** Okay, you know what to do, and JW knows what to do with you, so I figure you'll all be just fine until I see you tomorrow, no? Bye.
