Should you not know the noises of Kevin Drumm, Konx-om-Pax, Helen Gough, Helen Petts, or Failing Lights

____________

'Emerging from Chicago's improvised music scene in the 1990s, Kevin Drumm became one of the world's pre-eminent prepared guitar players. Since then his work has expanded to include electroacoustic compositions and live electronic music made with laptop computers and analog modular synthesizers. His early recordings contain mostly sparse, quiet sounds; recent works have been more loud and dense. Drumm has collaborated with many artists working in similar fields, including Japanese guitarist Taku Sugimoto, multi-instrumentalist and producer Jim O'Rourke, and many European improvisers such as Swedish saxophonist Mats Gustafsson and German trumpeter Axel Dörner. He has also worked with the artist group Simparch, composing a piece for their installation Spec, shown at Documenta XI in Kassel, Germany and at the Renaissance Society in Chicago. Drumm has also worked with saxophonist Ken Vandermark's Territory Band, which brings together American and European players who work in both jazz and free improvisation. Drumm's work draws upon musique concrète, electronic sound, improvisation, heavy metal, and noise music.' -- Stylus Magazine

'Konx-om-Pax is a 25 year old Glaswegian animator, graphic designer, DJ and producer whose creations permeate the “fine lines and blurred boundaries” between music production and installation art. A long time collaborator with the Scottish collective LuckyMe, his music videos, sleeve designs and installation work place his acid house and psychedelic influences in a thoroughly modern, hyper-real context. The intense experience of synaesthesia translates in his installations, allowing for a dramatic visual manifestation of the sounds he manipulates, whilst delicately balancing serious technical ability and a relatable playfulness that pushes the audience to their sensory limits. He has created videos, cover art, and visual designs for electronic music figures such as Autechre, Warp Records, Optimo Espacio, Underground Resistance and DFA. His latest project is Display Copy, a brand new label and club night focusing on the darker recesses of experimental electronica and techno, Display Copy is the culmination of the various artistic directions of Konx-om-Pax and his ideological kinsmen, such as Oneohtrix Point Never aka Daniel Lopatin.' -- Dazed Digital

'Helena Gough's work initially focused upon the collection and manipulation of 'real-world' sound material and the exploration of its abstract properties. Occasional deviations into synthetic and instrumental sources are now developing into more prominent ingredients. Each new sound-space is created by taking everything possible from the tiniest element, working to make something from nearly nothing. This reduction in means yields a density and richness of results.

'Initially trained in violin and composition at the Royal Academy of Music, Junior Academy, Helena went on to complete a BMus at Birmingham University. As a solo (laptop) player she is now presenting her music live on a regular basis, and is also a member of numerous improvising electro-acoustic ensembles involving musicians such as Lee Patterson, Benedict Drew, Andrea Neumann and Rhodri Davies. Her live sets are intended for dark spaces and involve multi-layering and improvisation with her sound materials in order to create a unique environment for each new performance.' -- helenagough.net

'Helen Petts is a visual artist and film-maker, working extensively in the field of free improvised and experimental music and live art both in still photography and video. Currently completing "Oikos" collaboration with Portuguese vocal artist Manuela Barile. About to start making experimental documentary of the development of "Eye to Eye" large multi art form theatre project by Sheila Hill with original music by Howard Skempton and Byron Wallen. Last year made 12 short film collaborations with musicians for "TAPS - Improvisations with Paul Burwell", a large collaborative project curated by visual artist Anne Bean of many musicians, live artists, pyrotechnicians who worked with Paul Burwell, percussionist, founder member of the London Musician's Collective and member of the Bow Gamelan Ensemble, who died in 2007. 'An evocative work of bleak electronic atmosphere and suffocating dread, Failing Lights is the intensely personal vision of Michigan (via Lexington, KY) artist Mike Connelly. While he has toured the world as 1/3 of legendary industrial/noise units Hair Police and Wolf Eyes, Connelly spends his days crafting a much different sound on his own. Under the Failing Lights flag, he has self-published a nearly uncountable number of cassettes and CD-Rs of rough drones, detuned improvised grit and unstable acoustics in tiny editions that quickly vanish into collector-land.' -- EAR/Rational Music

p.s. Hey. So, like I said, I'm at CDG airport welcoming my friend Joel to Paris this morning, and the full-length p.s. will be back tomorrow. As for today's post, those are basically some people whose work I've been into lately, and I thought you and they should be introduced. I hope you'll find their work of interest too. In any case, take care, and I'll see you tomorrow.
