'Foreign' Film Pop Quiz

* this post was inspired by and is dedicated to d.l. Justin

Below you will see 27 movie posters. Each poster advertises a known -- and in many cases very well known -- American or European film. Some films are recent, some are older. Your task is to guess the names of as many of the movies as you can. You can incorporate the guesses of earlier commenters into your guesses if you like. I would greatly prefer that you don't cheat by using babelfish or other translation services, but I can't stop you. The person who guesses the most film titles correctly by the time I post tomorrow will win a prize. The prize is that I will make a blog day about anyone or anything the winner chooses. 3 ... 2 ... 1 ...

p.s. Hey. I think the paragraph at the top explains the deal today, so fire away with your guesses if you're game. I have to be kind of a p.s. swifty because my duties as a collaborator kick in earlier today than they usually do. Basically, we didn't get all the sound recording we needed to do accomplished last night, so I need to head down to theater's soundproof booth and finish up this morning. ** Memoirs of a Heroinhead, Ha ha, okay, I should have figured that a mouth so strangely accommodating came straight from the cradle. I still say that stardom awaits your mouth, if you're patient. I will do my utmost to make it back to Paris before I expire, thanks for the tip. I might have slacked off without it. Thanks, man. ** Kier, Seagulls are unpopular, or they were when and where I was growing up. Too aggressive or something, as I recall. Oh, the poor fish, etc. I'm kind of into how sleek they are at the moment. Mm, yeah, strange and not cool: Bret's thoughts on the 'male gaze' and all that, obviously. Speaking as a friend of Bret's, I'll just say I'm glad he also said he needed to get over that fucked up viewpoint. ** David Ehrenstein, I guess there's been a letter of support for Polanksi or something like that passed around at Cannes where all the stars and filmmakers are being asked to sign. I know a bunch have signed, Godard and Woody Allen and others, and the only refusal so far that's made the news here at least has been Michael Douglas. ** Paradigm, Really glad you liked the work yesterday, and thank you for the good theater-making wishes. I'll be writing to you soon re: your email. I'm slowed down at the moment for the obvious reason. Take care. ** Alan, Hey. Oh, I seem to have accidentally launched a tiny controversy. It was my fuck up. I wasn't actually taking credit for the writing in Chris' piece, I was making a rushed and poorly constructed joke. I can't remember exactly what I said -- something like the writing seemed like it was mine, but that I could have been dreaming. I was poorly trying to cleverly say something on the order of if that was my writing, I was or would be dreaming aka I wish. Sorry for the misfiring wit and confusion. Great news about the good response to the caste, although, duh, I'm not surprised. The meeting is to confirm ... that they like it, that it will be published/posted and when and stuff? ** Tosh, Yeah, about the ABBA video collection. Being an adorer of the depressing, of course I kept it. Nice comparison there with the Velvets. I think ABBA was far more savvy and complexly aesthetic and self-referential that the average fan thinks. The great final video for 'Under Attack', with its physical grimness and subdividing and aligning of the band members and so on is such a brilliant wrap up and self-destruction of their earlier image making. ** Frank Jaffe, Such a strange but modest LA dream. If you could control your subconscious, I'd say go ahead let the orgies and Academy Awards flow next time. Maybe I'll pump a couple of double espressos around 11 pm on party night and see if I can get myself out the door. Good day to you, Frank. ** L@rstonovich, My own slash fiction site? Uh, that'll go viral for sure, NOT. Dude, don't even say the word '2001' around me! Or 'Apollo 13' either! Get thee behind me Satans. ** Jeff, Alan is right. That's not the first amazing and transcendent comment you've left here of late. I forget: do you write fiction, creative nonfiction, whatever ... ? Seeing you stretch out as writer of late has been really impressive. Too impressive to exist solely in a comment on this blog, I mean. ** _Black_Acrylic, Yep. ** JW Veldhoen, Thanks, John. I can pretty much guarantee you that Anonymous saw and appreciated your words. ** Bollo, The rehearsals go well, but intensely. The amount of time we have left to finish the piece, and distance we still need to go are getting weighty. A lot of things happening, and a lot that isn't right yet, basically, Great but more stressful than before. Like ... early Ballard when he was adhering more to the strictures of sci-fi? I've barely cracked that era of his work. I need to. Glad you got the artist statement done. How did you change your approach? ** Jesse Bransford, Jesse, old pal! Hey, man! Scott Treleaven is a great idea. He's very into Gysin. He owns one in fact, and he's planning to be in NYC for the opening and stuff, and I suspect he'll have people/ideas for you. Have you contacted Terence Hannum? He might be a good possibility. Hm, my brain is a bit scrambled this morning 'cos I'm mid-heavy work, but I'll give it a think during the day. I'm pretty sure names will spring to mind. I think I'm coming to NYC to work with Ishmael on a theater piece at the New Museum in early August, and I'm really forward to seeing the show. Just wonderful to see you, Jesse! ** Scunnard, Hey. Beautiful video! Hold on ... Everyone, the artist and d.l. Scunnard has made a video tribute/mash up to/of the Mt. St. Helens eruption and Joy Division that you really should really watch. It's here. I might have told you that a friend of mine, the poet Joel Colton, died in the Mt. St. Helens eruption. He made the most unfortunate decision to go camping on the mountains slopes on the day it ended up exploding. His body was never recovered. So, I have strong associations with that event too. And then there was the ash that fell heavily on LA for days and days. Thanks, man. ** Steevee, I hope the Lexapro does its job. It's an anti-depressant? I don't know it. Yeah, here's hoping it does for you what the doctor surmises. ** Chris (British), Base jump, yikes, I'm glad I didn't get the chance to click that video off after a few seconds, ha ha. ** Steven Trull, Nice. ** Uli, I'm very sorry to hear about your grandma. I hope she's doing okay. Oh, that's who Stellar Om Source is? I guess the clips I watched were all image montages. Huh, yeah, Tangerine Dream is a nice comparison. I can really see that. ** Chris Goode, Hey, Chris. Oh, yeah, I explained to Alan up above that I wasn't in fact saying -- even though my wordage seems to have said it against my will -- that I wrote that text, but rather that I dreamt I did. My speeding and laxness on the quip-constructing front are entirely to blame. My sincerest apologies, and I hope that misinfo is now nipped. Damn, I wish we'd been curated into this Queer Up North so I can could steal into your gig. We almost got curated for it early on with I think 'Kindertotenlier', but I think money or something dashed that. Everyone, if you're in or going to be in or near Manchester, UK, the very great Chris Goode is doing a new piece at the Queer Up North festival called 'Where You Stand', and it's an absolute fucking must, so be there, and here's how and where you can. Knock 'em out like only you can, man, and I'm sorry again for the confusion caused by my feeble attempt to simultaneously joke and praise. ** Bernard Welt, No, I'm mega-out of it re: who directed what 'Glee' episode and so on. I'll excitedly watch anything Whedon does, even after the shruggy meh that was 'Doll House'. ** Christopher/ Mark, Not having seen more a clip or two of 'Glee', I'm so curious to see if I'll find it as uninteresting as I imagine I will. ** David, Hey. ** Chris, Hey, Chris! It's awesome to see you, man! Yeah, I heard that Atlas Sound song. Great! I'm seeing them in a couple of weeks at last, and I hope I'll finally get to meet Bradford Cox who, as some long termers around here might remember, was once a d.l. of this very blog. Miss you, man. I'm awaiting progress or a firming up of the August 'Them' rehearsals thing, meaning, I guess, whether the powers that be are going to bring me over for the work or not. ** Statictick, Yep, I get to Wire on Sunday. Very excited, I've seen them a bunch, but not yet in the newest post-Bruce Gilbert incarnation. Gotta zoom, but take care, Nick. ** Sypha, In the case of that interview, I think Bret was being sincere and just thinking aloud. ** Misanthrope, I've heard of Chantix. So, that's the plan? Has she agreed? I hope so. I want to know how it goes because, obviously, I'd love to be able to quit smoking without killing myself or needing to quit writing and doing the blog for months and months. ** Slatted Light, Hey. I agree with everything you said about Bret's statement, but, liking him and knowing him a bit as I do, I think I can imagine his tone of voice and facial expression as he said that, and I think the text was likely missing the bit of irony and dose of self-doubt that is his natural manner, so I give some credit to his qualifying of the statement with his stated need to rethink it. But he said what he said, you're right. ** Inthemostpeculiarway, Sparkly-eyed is better, definitely and it's all yours. Yeah, ha ha, don't blame me for the bug incident 'cos I don't give that nacho chemical plop the benefit of being cheese. Yesterday was more stressful. I knew the giddy progress phase wouldn't last long. I like 'Poison Ivy' too. Guilty pleasure, I guess. Another pretty as a picture Bendy report. Okay, I'd better rush into my day report now because my collaborators are getting a little antsy with me. Gisele radically rethought/ restaged the Jonathan kills Jonathan scene. It needs work, but I think it's better even though the music drowned out the text in the new version, which I made it quite clear is not acceptable. Margret's part got heavily worked on by the visiting Anja, who was in most of Gisele's and my earlier pieces, and who really got Margret to take the intensity up a few levels. There were a lot of fog and hologram tests. The fog is getting better, the hologram stuff is still not right, and that's getting pretty frustrating. Might be a tense meeting about that today. And other stuff. We started recording the new dialogues/texts, and they still need more finessing, which is why I have to rush today. It was non-stop work all day, pretty exhausting, and we didn't finish until quite late, at which point I stumbled back to the hotel and buried my head in a pillow. All right, give Wednesday your very best. ** Tender Prey, Hey, Marc. Wow, thanks for posting the text. Can I have one more day to address it? I'm so sorry. Between the rush I'm in this morning and my head being so kidnapped by the theater stuff, I can't let myself dwell in my normal head long or fully enough to say anything interesting. But I will tomorrow, I promise. I'm really sorry. The timing is just kind of unfortunate because the theater piece is in very high gear right now, and I'm consumed by it and by a number of stress points having to with it and what it isn't at the moment, too consumed maybe. During my breaks today, I will get my thoughts together. Thanks, Marc, and thanks for your patience. ** Justin, The main thing I remember about the shop from peeking in its windows is how tiny and not earthshatteringly unusual it looked at a glance. But that's always how it is, I guess, and a closed shop is not the full picture, especially in that case. ** Oscar B, Hi, O. Things are good here, yeah, just, wow, intense right now. Lots and lots to do. Oh, tell me how that film was, obviously. I'm so curious now. I hear the weather in Paris has been very Kiddiepunk-friendly. It's slightly less so here. Miss you. ** Creative Massacre, Hey, pal. I'm sorry to hear about the stomach setback, obviously, but I bet the Houston trip will be just the medicine, no? Very cool. Yeah, I want to hear as much about that sojourn as you can share. ** Little foal, Hey, lf. I'm super glad things went so well. Yeah, no full fledged bathroom would curl me into a non-creative ball too, I'm sure. A hostel will be a nice context. Very porn, or very Eastern European porn anyway. I'm sorry to be so speedy today. I'm writing this while voices with French accents growl at me out in the hallway. All the best and my love to you. ** I have to zoom out of here now and make nice with my impatient collaborators. Try the pop quiz, if you like. Curious to see how well people do. See you tomorrow as well.
