p.s. Hey. It's been a long time since this blog celebrated the wondrous work of Erik Visser aka d.l. Adjoun, and I think it's high time for another spotlight. Please enjoy the sights. Me, I'm feeling rather more rested now, and here's hoping the more regular sleeping pattern that finally returned to my fold last night holds. Otherwise, nothing's especially new, so I'll continue. ** Adam Humphrey, Hey, thanks for dropping in. That was some nice eating there, btw. ** JS, Greetings. I think so too. ** Jordan Castro, Hey. The mighty beast is unleashed at last. ** Tao Lin, Hey, Tao. Lovely to see you. Kudos. ** Oscar B., Hope the Monop gave you everything you could ever want. I checked the listings, and let's talk/meet in a while, eh? ** Chris (British), Colored pencils, very nice. I couldn't be more intrigued and expectant re: your in-progress reports to come. I wonder what I'm doing half the time when I write too, if that helps. Let yourself enjoy the hunt, I say. ** Put The Lotion In The Basket, Hey, Nick. Glad you liked Zach's stuff. Seems Jesse recommended some great things. Your Sotos experience is timely since the very same Jesse has put together a Day on him that's coming up here this weekend. I got the Jarman email, thank you so much, although I'll only open it for the first time today because my brain and eyesight have been undeserving until now. It sounds amazing, man. ** Allesfliest, Hey. Did you manage to give those negative energies targets or at least options? ** David Ehrenstein, No doubt 'Howl' will open over here. The French like them some Beats. Every review of 'Howl' I could find online was kind of lukewarm at best. But I read a bunch of great post-Sundance screening blab about that new JG-L film called ... 'Hester'? Something like that. Oh, I will show Yury the fashion slideshow at the other side of that link when he wakes up today -- it's his day off, which usually means waking up at 3 pm -- and I'll let you know what he selects. ** Slatted Light, Yep, he is. How are you, man? What's going on with you of late? Fill me in. ** Pascal, Hi, P. That was a very cool reading the list of your fave blog posts. Some really interesting and pretty, unexpected choices. I've actually been thinking about asking people around here what their fave and least fave all time posts have been, but doing so feels a little too self-indulgent or something. The great catering post was by Creative Massacre. Did you have big, dumb-ass fun at '2012'? I did. ** Sypha, Wow, no caps or 69. Streamlined. I forget if you have those upcoming medical tests during your vacation or not. If so, and assuming they either locate the physical problem or, finding nothing, determine that your woes are largely stress and emotion-related, hopefully the vacation will at least give you a clarification and suggest what the correct route(s) to health are if you're willing to take them. ** Alan, Ha ha, that was very nice. I guess since Itmpw showed up, I should save my day report such as it is for his time slot, but here's an exclusive for you: I did shower yesterday. Man, your day was a zillion times more interest than 90% of my days. I envy you and Itmpw your abilities to report in such detail. I just can't seem to do that, partly because I have to be so careful with my time and mental energy when I do the p.s., I suppose. Anyway, blah blah, I loved being your looky-loo. ** JW Veldhoen, People who view having an opinion on Tao's and Zach's work as an all or nothing, black and white thing are so, I don't know, just letting their green in their skin show? Nice thing on 'Jerk'/Vancouver. Thanks for the alert, man. Yeah, G. said it went incredibly well there. I had to look up 'Gestalt therapy' just to be sure I had my definition right, and, sure, I can hang with that. So you're really going back to Alberta this time? I mean, makes sense, what you said. When? ** Dan, Hey, Dan! That's a terrific, thorough interview. Very attentive, good job by Amy Handler. Oh, I should ... Everyone, there's an excellent interview with film director Dan Faltz about 'Weak Species', his terrific short film based on my writings, and it's located here, if you're interested. Great about the NYC screening, although it would have been great to see you in LA had the timing been better. I'm so grateful for your stubbornness, Dan, and let me know if there's anything I can do to help, of course. Take care, man. ** Christopher/ Mark, I wonder if coffee counts just so long it's black and dense enough. If so, I guess I'm moping around too. ** Bill, I think I just burned most of my j.l. off. Can you be far behind? That Five Dials tribute to DFW is very moving, yeah. I should probably ... Everyone, if you're a David Foster Wallace fan, and if you haven't read the special Five Dials issue in tribute to him, which features pieces by De Lillo, Zadie Smith, George Saunders, and many others, it's beautiful stuff. Bill posted a link to the tribute yesterday, and I'll pass it on. It's here. Thanks, Bill. Here's to perkiness. ** Steevee, Hey. ** Math, Mathster! You emailed me? Cool, I'll go find it after this. You great and not too, too busy? ** Adjoun, Hope my little thingeroony today is okay with you. Ha ha, love the vampire weekend collages even more than the collages the other day maybe. Let me add them to the show. Everyone, in addition to the drawings by Adjoun on show today, here are two of his super collages as a kind of change of pace. ** Winter rates, or, no, wait ... L@arstonovich, I'm liking the new screen name. It's real and also chewy. I do Skype on occasion, yes, and we are certainly long due a phone conversation. What's your handle? ** _Black_Acrylic, More collaging would definitely be a plus. As would a playlist of what jacks a body. Congrats on the auditory success, man. ** Creative Massacre, My weekend was mostly devoted to feeling jet lagged and trying to feel less that way, so it was pretty low key too. Nothing to compete with your ceiling disaster. Ugh. Well, another distraction at least, ha ha? Did you see that Pascal picked your catering post as one of his all time favorite blog Days ever? I have to concur. Here's to a great, non-soggy week ahead for you, buddy. ** Paul Curran, Your report on the current novel work made my head spin in the most glorious fashion. Wowzer. Sounds absolutely amazing! Mm, upon starting to go through my draft yesterday after a two weeks plus break, I realize it needs so, so much work. Yesterday that freaked me out. This morning I'm just back on the horse. ** T H O M, No, I fucking accidentally fell asleep at 7 pm and didn't wake up until 3 am, for Christ's sake. I've been a jet lag zombie. So, no, grr, I wasn't there, and I'm still bashing myself in the head about that this morning. You're not still here in Paris and visit-able, are you? Damn. ** Tigersare, Well, insightfulness is in the eye of the beholder, no? ** Inthemostpeculiarway, There you are. Oh, that's okay on the no-show. I missed your report, of course, but you didn't miss anything by not hearing mine, trust me. Didn't the real Belle du Jour turn out to be the writer Stewart Home? I read that somewhere, but I guess that confession could have been one of Stewart's pranks. Careful with that sore. My weekend was mostly just vagueness in the shape of 48 hours. I dragged myself around. The dragging was intersected with bathing, eating, and smoking. I started working on my novel again, and, boy, am I not anywhere close to having that thing finished. Realizing that depressed me. Uh, yesterday was my best friend Joel's birthday, so I wished him festiveness via both the phone and Facebook. Gisele called from Vancouver to tell me 'Jerk' was going great up there and report that signs are very, very positive that she and Stephen O. will get to move into the Recollets in the next month or two, which is good news on many levels. I would be able to take a short elevator ride and then a mere handful of footsteps to go to work, for instance, rather than taking the longish metro ride to her headquarters that is required of me now. Did I do anything else? Hm, some reading and blog post making and a lot of sleeping or quasi-sleeping rather and ... nothing much. But I'm almost kind of vaguely spritely today, so we'll see what's what come my next report. You're up. ** Chris, Big up on the great rehearsal. When do you head over to this continent again? I pulled out 'Beaster' a month or two ago. I still thought about half of it was pretty fierce. ** Stephen, Yeah, say the word as soon as there's a version of 'Bidgood' that you're happy with. Hm, no, I wish I knew of possible jobs for you, but I only know of work seekers at the moment. Everyone, Anyone in LA have a job available for a most fine young fella and brilliant writer to boot named Stephen? I can highly recommend him, if so. If you can help out a dude and beloved d.l., say something here on the blog or write to Stephen directly if you know how. Thank you. ** Misanthrope, Why did I include the disparagers' remarks? Mm, well, I guess because there are a bunch of ridiculous people out there who seem to resent or hate or envy or whatever Zach for reasons that just seem like utter bullshit and self-indicting as far as I'm concerned, and I guess I thought those haters were part of the story or something. I mean, one, I know Zach, and he's an awesome, funny, sweet guy, and, two, this crap about his work being derived from Tao's is just stupid and bitter grapes-related. People who've been around this blog long enough to remember the days when Zach was a regular here know that he had the essentials of his terrific writing voice and style down long before he'd ever read Tao's work much less became Tao's friend and comrade. The dislike of Zach just seems like weird runoff from the noisy dislike/ jealousy of Tao's success among some people out there, and that Tao hating is stupid and groundless in and of itself. So I guess I thought the disparagers' spew was just funny and petty and weird and, hence, entertaining in a general way. ** Richard, Hey! Oh, man, thank you. Thank you a lot. That means a great deal coming from you. And, wow, thanks for putting up with that incredible trek to and fro in order to see 'Jerk'. And, yes indeed, I am reading and reading and reading my debuts. ** Alyssa Nolan, Not so fast on declaring me the winner of the first poem contest. Someday I'll show you my 'Mission: Impossible' poem, and, when I do, I think you'll understandably transfer that trophy from my mantle to yours. No, I don't know 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia'. Being over here, I am a total caveman about American TV. What a curious trio of classes you've got there. Curious in the positive sense. I like how they blend. ** Justin, No, I can't imagine myself in a Bowery outfit either. Yeah, I did a Leigh Bowery Day, hm, a year or so ago or maybe a little more than that. Oh, hey, you're the local Stewart Home expert. Did he not reveal himself as the author behind Belle du Jour, or was that revelation indeed just a classic SH prank? Do you know? ** Lord_s, Well, yeah, that's precisely why your project could end up being a next big thing. I mean due to its lack of precedent. It's really mostly Greg who picks the Southern Lord roster, so don't let O'Malley's cringe stop you. Anyway, even if Stephen did have a vote on your tape, Gisele would talk him into voting yes. Mm, I usually just find that opening the document holding my long neglected writing and starting to reread it gets my fingers typing pretty fast. Even if I initially use the delete tab more than the rest of the keyboard. Time away really is a good thing. The prospect is scary, but the distance and break always seems to end up helping out. With me, anyway. ** Alec Niedenthal, Alec, sir. You're reviewing Zach's book? HTMLG is starting a book review section? Great news on both fronts. Bookforum needs some competition. Really looking forward to your new story in Corium and the DFW piece, man. I got a little rusty work in on the novel. Mostly I noticed all the mess in it that needs fixing up and then bit my nails. ** Uli, Like I kind of said to Misanthrope, it seems to me that the weirdly impassioned hatred of Tao and now Zach just comes out of a self-serving envy, bitterness, etc. Whenever the haters actually lay out a criticism of the writing, it's very flimsy. They don't like the style and sensibility. So, fine. Taste is taste. The rest just seems like resentment of the effect of Tao's and Zach's inherent charisma and cleverness followed by a lot of wild conspiracy theorizing about some phantom, all powerful literary in-group from which the haters feel they're being excluded. Pretty classic stuff, really. I find the intensity of the dislike of Tao and more recently Zach and how it just inadvertently draws more helpful attention to their books than not kind of fascinating. ** Bollo, Hey. Wednesday ... maybe I can do it by then. Might be a bit tight, but I can try, and I'd be happy to. You might want to send me an email telling me the specifics on the applications so I would know how to shape and direct the letter. My email is: dcooperweb@ gmail.com. ** Okay, a happy Monday to you. Fly far away from all of your troubles on Adjoun's delicate but mighty wings, and I'll see you tomorrow.
