Far right already active in No campaign through anti Abortion front for Lisbon 2 referendum

First posters to appear in Ireland on Lisbon vote from anti Abortion group which boasts and praises its links with the far right and "quasi fascist"" organisations.
It is clear taht as with Libertas , a NO vote will be used by these right wing religious fanatics a as mandate for their sick causes.

Irish people must reject the far right for national pride and prosperity.

Cóir makes no secret of its links to anti-abortion group

Irish Times

Cóir was one of the most strident voices on the No side during the last Lisbon referendum – but is it really a front for Youth Defence?

IS IT a front for Youth Defence or a grassroots pro-family movement? Ultra right-wing extremists or committed campaigners with a conscience?

It goes by different guises, but one thing is clear: Cóir has got people talking again.

It was the organisation responsible for the most eye-catching posters of the last election, such as the “three monkeys”, with its stark warnings that voters would lose power, money and freedom.

This time around, it has been the first campaign group out of the blocks, blitzing the capital with posters about issues ranging from the minimum wage to EU subsidies.

Much of the talk this time has centred on who is behind Cóir and whether, as Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin has suggested, they are a front for the controversial anti-abortion group Youth Defence. Cóir describes itself as a voluntary non-profit organisation whose aims are to inform the people of Ireland on the “dangers of the Lisbon Treaty and the democratic deficit in the European Union”.

What its website doesn’t say is that the organisation operates out of the same building on Capel Street in Dublin that accommodates Youth Defence, the Pro-Life Alliance and that also hosted Justin Barrett’s Mother and Child campaign.

Youth Defence has courted controversy in the past with its direct action, while the Mother and Child campaign was badly damaged during the 2002 campaign on the Nice Treaty when its emerged that Mr Barrett had associations with right-wing, quasi-fascist organisations in Europe.

In addition, some of its leaders, such as Niamh Ó Broin (formerly Niamh Nic Mhathúna) are closely associated with both Youth Defence and the Mother and Child campaign.

Brian Hickey, Cóir’s spokesman and a member of the Christian Solidarity Party, says that it has nothing to hide. He describes the group as an independent organisation that is lucky enough to have the “support and energy” of some Youth Defence members.

“Sharing the same building doesn’t make you the same organisation. Cóir pays rent for the use of the building,” Mr Hickey said.

He said that Youth Defence was “a fantastic organisation” and a lot of it members were “very keen, motivated and hard-working volunteers . . . it’s not a question of distancing ourselves from them”.

Of Cóir’s estimated group of 2,600 volunteers, Mr Hickey said most, if not all, shared concerns about issues such as the right to life and that the majority were from a Christian background.

The organisation is planning to spend about €250,000 on some 11,000 posters and up to one million leaflets.

It says that it has raised about half of that sum so far – mostly from individual donations – and insists that it has not received any donations from Youth Defence or any other organisation.

It says it is able to keep its costs down by designing and producing everything in-house, booking advertising space where it can best reach undecided voters, and backing it up with door-to-door canvassing.

In contrast, it says the big political parties have spent a fortune on advertising but failed to back it up with proper canvassing.

In the meantime, Cóir says the “smear campaigns” against it will not work. It points out that its membership is up by 30 per cent on last year and that many of those who worked with groups such as Libertas are joining the organisation.

“Anyone is welcome to join Cóir and they are doing so in increasing numbers,” a spokesman said.

“In the meantime, Fianna Fáil are terrified of going near the doors.”

In The Face Of

The other day I was driving down the freeway and saw a billboard that I have seen a few times before. It was a picture of Erik Weihenmayer with the caption "Climbed Everest Blind." Being the emotional creature I am, I got all teary and moved.

I am a sucker for triumphs of the human spirit. This is why I totally dig watching dancers with missing limbs and twisted bodies and Team Hoyt. Bethany Hamilton lost her arm in a shark attack and continued to surf. Helen Keller overcame her mind blowing limitations to become an amazing writer and teacher. We honor Christopher Reeves and Michael J. Fox and Stephen Hawking. It isn't hard to find examples of people that overcome incredible odds by saying, "The hell I can't."

But what about the rest of us? What about those of us that have full use of all our limbs? What about those of us that have functioning bodies with all five senses intact? For us it's just dancing and climbing and running right? Yes we push ourselves to do great things, and oftentimes succeed, but don't really have billboards erected in our honor.

But, what if we could look into the human spirit and catch a glimpse of the hidden miracles that are possible? Every single person on this planet has been injured and crippled in some small, or enormous, way.

How many of us have lost limbs of love and faith and trust? How many of us have been crippled by abuse and betrayal? How many of us have had our minds and hearts mangled nearly beyond recognition and have chosen to overcome and heal and live a full emotional life anyway?

Is having your heart broken by betrayal or your spirit crushed by abuse and then making the conscious choice to continue to love and to be truly alive in the face of that experience any less wondrous than climbing a mountain blind? I don't believe so.

What if we could take a look at our greatest emotional handicaps, our deepest wounds and fears, and choose to act in the face of them anyway? What if we could dig that deep and look with that much courage and overcome with that much determination? What if the world could see the ways in which our hearts and minds have said, "The hell I can't."

What if the world was covered with billboards of everyday human beings that said "Heart was broken. Loved anyway." "Was betrayed. Trusted anyway." "Body and mind were abused. Lived with courage anyway." "Faith was destroyed. Believed anyway."

To me, those reminders of the power of the human spirit would be no less remarkable and moving than the others. Maybe even more so.

Take some time to look inside and make a choice to act in the face of your limitations. Ask yourself, "What will my billboard say?"

See it. And then do it.

I promise you there will be cheering.

The Right to Work

I am currently reading Barry Goldwater's The Conscience of a Conservative and there is a chapter that got me thinking. The chapter discusses labor and unions.

Maryland, as you may know, is not a right-to-work state. It's a Right-to-Join-the-Union-Or-Take-A-Hike state. That means that if there is a union that represents the employees of that company, you MUST join that union in order to work for the company. You cannot refuse to join the union. Joining the union is a condition of employment.

In right-to-work states, such as those in the South, you are not required to join the union in order to be hired by the company. Have you ever wondered why nearly every new manufacturing facility that has been built in the last 20 years has NOT been built in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, or Maryland? It sounds fairly simple to me.

The one thing, however, that really makes me anti-union is their abuse of power over their forced members. Unions routinely persuade their members to vote Democratic and donate millions of dollars yearly to the Democratic candidate of their liking - usually the ones that promise to push for higher wages for union members and life harder for the companies that hire their members. Stick it to the company, right?

However, if you are a Libertarian or a Republican you have no say in how your union dues are spent. I belonged to the Teamsters when I was employed by the Price Club back in college. My dues over a 3 month time period were $400. Read - four hundred dollars!!! For a summer job!!! And I KNOW that a portion of that money was used as donations toward Democrats, spending which I would object.

I am not anti-union in the respect that I think they ought to go away. To the contrary. I think that unions keep companies in check. You'll remember from 5th grade history that the unions were created to stop wide-spread abuse of employees during the Industrial Revolution. And unions continue to keep these companies in check. And the unions can represent an employee in a grievance situation.

But let's be realistic. Today's unions are their for self-serving purposes. Making a few at the top very rich. They are not really there to represent the collective bargaining power of the masses to make life easier for them. So in that respect, Barry Goldwater's book is relevant today as it was in 1960. Check it out.

Funeral TV ...

So I spent the weekend, well Friday evening and Saturday watching all the Kennedy festivities. Why? Because that’s what I do. Like a drunk to a good dive bar, I’m drawn to these things by an invisible power that I have no ability to resist. A few years ago, after Pope John Paul II, or JayPeeToo as I called him, died, I got up at 3 am just to watch the entire funeral service.

Anyway, any formal get together like this that has lots of pomp and circumstance surrounding it is going to be interesting to me. I know there are some out there who are thinking “I bet if Teddy was a republican you wouldn’t have watched all of this shit.” Not true at all. Of course, we’ll just have to wait until Gerald Ford dies for me to … What? He’s dead? Really?

Hoookay then, I guess we’ll just have to wait until Ronald Rea … what? Ronnie died too? Ohhhhh … that’s so sad.

I’m kidding, I’m kidding! I kid because I care.

I was there, glued to the TV, for every second of Ronnie’s funeral. I watched on C-Span as people filed past his casket and watched the memorials and funeral services. That was great stuff. I think Reagan put on the third best funeral of my lifetime. Here’s my list of best celebrity funerals of my lifetime:

1. Pope John Paul II. I mean come on, they brought the body out strapped to this big board or whatever and held him up for the crowd. Nobody is going to top that. Nobody.

2. Princess Di. The Brits really know how to do these types of things.

3. Ronald Reagan. Lying in state then heading back to Cali for the funeral. Lots of Hollywood types. The whole thing was impressive.

4. Teddy Kennedy. Anytime you get Yo-Yo Ma and Placido Domingo to perform, then you’ve put on a pretty damn good funeral.

5. Princess Grace. Again, royalty knows how do these things right. And, Princess Grace was freaking gorgeous.
Photobucket

I don’t know if Michael Jackson’s funeral comes next or not cause I decided to stop thinking about this topic. He probably does though.

Anyway, I remember watching Nixon’s funeral with my dad. His was pretty basic is probably way down the list. At one point, one of my step-sisters, in her usual, annoying way, blurted out “Why the hell is Bill Clinton there at a republican’s funeral?!” Before I could say anything dad quipped “For the same reason that I’m watching it. To make sure they burry that crooked son of a bitch.”

Back to this week. The first thing that I was fascinated by this week was watching on Friday when they brought the casket out of the Kennedy’s house to place it into the hearse and take it to Bahston. What I found myself wondering was if Teddy’s remains had just been kept there at the house for three days.

I mean, did they clear out the extra fridge in the garage and stuff him in there? Or did they just turn down the temperature in the wine cellar and keep him in there? I guess they might have just propped him up in his easy chair with a cigar in one hand and a glass of Scotch in the other and left him like that.

My mother assures me that they probably took the body to the funeral home to do all that stuff that they do there. Then, they probably brought the body back to the house on Friday for all the official festivities. I guess that’s possible. OTOH, it’s also possible that his body wasn’t even in that casket. I mean, they didn’t open it and show us, did they? Come on conspiracy theorists! I know you have your hands full with death panels and Obama’s secret army bullshit, but help me out here, will ya?

Anyway, I enjoyed watching the ceremonies. I enjoyed hearing the stories told by the politicians and family members. Some were funny, some were sad and others where actually kind of inspiring. Both the memorial and the funeral mass were a great celebration of life.

Some people will whine that it was “political” or whatever, but they were going to bitch about something anyway. Which is fine. As I said after Robert Novak died last week, I don’t subscribe to the social rule that says you have to pretend someone was perfect or even a good person just because he just died. Oh sure, maybe you don’t go out of your way to trash him, but you don’t have to say that you loved him or even respected him if you didn’t. It would be nice if we based our complaints on facts, but oh well. Also, it’s not like libruls were quiet and thoughtful after Reagan died.

Well, this post is getting pretty long. I guess I’ll just say that I consider Teddy to be a great senator, but I don’t know that I can all him a great man. But, I will say that in the last 10 years or so, he did come close to being the man that he could have been all along. There was lots of good and lots of bad to him. Some people will never forgive the bad and some will only see the good. But, that’s pretty much the way it is for any politician, I guess.

Rest in Peace Ted Kennedy. You lived a hell of a full and amazing life.

Irish Minister slams hard line anti abortion group over their Lisbon campaign

Irish minister for Foreign Affairs has rounded on COIR and Youth Defence which he says are the same organisation. Youth Defence is a hard line fringe anti Abortion group with links to the US religious far right . COIR are their front organisation which shares the same office which, they think has less negativity attached to it. Youth Defence have previous been exposed for harbouring neo Nazi supporters such as Justin Barrett. Barrett's pal James Reynolds the Libertas chairman in Longford has also launched a campaign against Lisbon claiming that it is a farmers group.

COIR claim they have 1 million leaflets ready to go. The one I have seen have no mention of abortion. This time the lies are about jobs and wages. Despite having the second highest minimum wage in the world COIR say that Ireland will be overrun with "cheap labour" and the minimum wage will drop 7 euro to1.80.

Youth Defence, Libertas and COIR cadre are obviously working together behind the scenes on their xenophobic far right campaign.

COIR=Taliban= Bad for Ireland.

Cóir campaign 'cynical' - Martin

BARRY ROCHE, Southern Correspondent and ELAINE EDWARDS

Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin has launched a strong attack on some anti-Lisbon treaty groups accusing them of running a campaign based on lies and untruths.

Mr Martin said the Irish people deserved an honest debate that focused on the real issues involved in the Lisbon Treaty and there should be no role for groups "cynically trying to hide their role".

Mr Martin accused anti-abortion group Youth Defence of masquerading behind "their front group, Cóir" and he said no one should be in any doubt but that Coir and Youth Defence were one and the same organisation.

He said Cóir's leaders were all associated with Youth Defence, the two organisations shared the same address and Cóir's poster designs all come from Youth Defence.

"In fact as of early last week, there was not one single mention of Cóir on the door or windows of it supposed offices which were in fact decorated solely with Youth Defence logos and posters," he said.

Mr Martin said the posters put up by Youth Defence on Friday night claiming that ratification of Lisbon would be a betrayal of those who died in the Easter Rising was "both a disgrace and an insult to the heroes of 1916".

"It is the duty of every person who respects the great generation which sacrificed so much for us to come out and work against these people and what they stand for," he said.

"Pro-Europeans must start speaking up and pointing to the clear fact that it is the ideas of anti-EU groups which represent a move away from the ideas of sovereignty and identity upon which this state is founded.

"Their insular, defensive approach to Europe has no serious precedent in our history and it has nothing new to offer us now," said Mr Martin in a speech to the Ógra Fianna Fáil conference in Cork this morning.

He also accused Youth Defence of peddling lies and untruths with their claims that ratification of the Lisbon Treaty would lead to abortion becoming available in Ireland and to the national minimum wage being cut to €1.80 an hour.

"People on all sides are entitled to be heard but the issues in this referendum are too serious to let a shadowy and extreme group distort the debate with a deeply cynical campaign," he said.

Spokesman for Cóir Richard Greene said attempts by Mr Martin to "smear" the group's campaign were “entirely pathetic”.

Mr Greene said the Minister’s comments “smacked of desperation", since he was "clearly aware that Cóir’s canvassers are already having a significant effect right across the country”.

“The Minister can bluster as much as he likes, but the fact remains that the Lisbon Treaty does nothing for Ireland and Cóir are engaged in a nationwide campaign to ensure that voters understand the treaty and the reasons to vote No,” said Mr Greene.

He said Mr Martin had previously “tried and failed” to attack Cóir by alleging it was a front for Youth Defence.

“When will the Minister realise that voters have no problem with either Cóir’s pro-life stance or the fact that, while Cóir is an independent organisation, we are lucky enough to have the support and energy of some Youth Defence members.”

“Fianna Fáíl spent their time accusing Cóir of lying about Lisbon and abortion last year. Yet their own research showed that most people believed Cóir on the issue,” said Mr Greene.

Mr Greene said Fianna Fáil and the other political parties had "thoroughly disgraced politics, and cost the taxpayer tens of millions of euro paying for tribunals investigating the murky and dishonest nature of Irish political life".

He said that the Minister’s "real problem" was that Cóir volunteers were busy canvassing and postering with the same excellent material produced last year and were having a significant effect on voting intentions.

“We have over 2600 volunteers this year, an increase of 30 per cent over last year; a million leaflets are going out and 11,000 posters are being erected. Anyone is welcome to join Cóir and they are doing so in increasing numbers. In the meantime, Fianna Fáil are terrified of going near the doors

Intimate Inspirations: Designer Interviews ~ Part 1

Eve interviews Emily Lau, Owner and Designer of The Little Bra Company, about the inspirations behind her vava-voom enhancing bras for small busted women.

"Southern California native Emily Lau has combined her love of lingerie and need for cleavage to create THE LITTLE BRA COMPANY—a brand that celebrates the fact that good things do come in small packages. Years of shopping in department stores and sexy lingerie catalogs left Emily supremely frustrated, as she discovered that the bras that fit well looked like training bras and the sexy styles never fit quite right. She was not alone. Many of her petite girlfriends shared her lament and longed for a little help to fill out the latest fashions. Emily’s desire to make the most of her assets (without silicon or saline) prompted her to make the perfect little bra…with a BIG push."

Click on the video below to see the interview with Eve and Emily.

A Fool and His Money

You know the expression A fool and his money are soon parted? Well in the case of Maryland State Delegate Jon Cardin, a fool and only a little tiny bit of his money are soon parted.

Delegate Cardin made the news a couple of weeks ago when he somehow finagled a deal with Baltimore City Police to conduct a marriage proposal prank. Cardin and his girlfriend were staying on a friend's boat somewhere in the Inner Harbor. The police would then come aboard and demand a search of the boat while the Foxtrot helicopter circled above. This would give the impression that they were searching for drugs or something of that nature. The police then find the ring, all the while keeping his girlfriend thinking that they are in trouble. Then Jon would get down on his knee and propose.

The good news is that she said yes. The bad news is that she is marrying a politician who abused the power of his elected position for special privileges.

Once the incident was exposed he issued a half-hearted apology. Once the half-hearted apology was exposed, he issued a real apology and said that he used bad judgment and would reimburse the city for the costs of the operation. Baltimore City Police Commissioner Fred Bealefeld then determined that the total cost was $300 (or more likely some out-of-college intern calculated it and he supports it).

$300. Bad judgment? Is this insulting or what? How stupid does the city think everyone is? And if it weren't for his last name, Cardin would not be getting off so easy. His uncle is U.S. Senator Ben Cardin, one of the Maryland Senators that favors Obama's socialized healthcare plan. If his last name was Eludius he probably would have been arrested.

So when are a fool and his money not parted? When you're a Cardin.
